Microsoft to make performance-based job cuts across departments, including security, impacting “less than 1%” of the workforce

At the start of 2023, Microsoft revealed intentions to reduce its staff by around 10,000 employees before the end of Q3 FY23 (Fiscal Year 2023 Quarter 3), representing roughly 5% of their total workforce. Now, this tech corporation has declared that layoffs affecting various departments, such as their security division, will be based on performance.

While speaking to CNBC, a Microsoft spokesman indicated:

At Microsoft, we prioritize nurturing top-tier talent and fostering continuous learning and development. If someone’s performance is lacking, we address the situation appropriately.

Based on Business Insider reports, less than 1% of Microsoft’s current workforce is anticipated to be impacted by the recent job cuts due to performance reasons. As of late June 2024, Microsoft employed around 228,000 individuals globally. In the past few months, managers have been evaluating employee performance across all departments using a process known as level 80.

2024 saw a significant wave of layoffs at Microsoft’s gaming division, affecting more than 1,900 employees across Activision Blizzard, Xbox Game Studios, and ZeniMax Media. In response to a series of security breaches, the company emphasized that every employee should prioritize security as a fundamental responsibility.

Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, emphasized during the FY24 Q3 earnings report that security is essential in every aspect of their technology structure and is their topmost concern. In May, Microsoft revealed its intention to hold key executives responsible for cybersecurity by linking a portion of their compensation to achieving specific security targets. Additionally, they pledged to swiftly address any security concerns raised and take immediate action to resolve them.
