Microsoft backtracks DALL-E 3 AI’s ‘PR16’ upgrade after backlash as Grok gets an Unhinged Mode: “Bing has become useless”

If you haven’t heard, Microsoft recently launched a significant upgrade for Bing Image Creator. This update integrates the most recent version of OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 image creation tool, which they’ve nicknamed PR16. The company claims that images generated using this update will be produced “twice as fast” compared to earlier versions.

Yet, it appears that Microsoft did not meet its commitments as promised. Numerous users expressed their discontent on social media platforms, openly airing their dissatisfaction with the recent update. This situation is reminiscent of overpromising and under-delivering. The update was met with criticism, with a user on X voicing:

What could be the reason that all images currently seem to have lower quality than they did just a few weeks back? They appear both blurry and overly sharp, with less detail, their stylistic versatility has decreased, and there appears to be more censorship.

A disgruntled user expressed their frustration on Reddit, stating that they’ve switched to using ChatGPT because Bing, in their opinion, has become virtually useless due to poor image quality and excessive censorship restrictions.

Comment from r/bing

Due to strong criticism from users who found the pictures generated by PR16 to be overly cartoonish and lacking life, Microsoft temporarily reverted to the earlier version of its Bing Image Creator until they can come up with a solution for improvement.

We’ve managed to recreate some of the problems mentioned, and as a temporary solution, we’re returning to DALL-E 3 PR13 until we can resolve them. Regrettably, the deployment process is moving quite slowly. It began a week ago and should take another 2-3 weeks before it reaches full completion.

Users appear satisfied with Microsoft’s choice to revert Bing Image Creator back to its original version, as they have mentioned several reasons for their contentment.

I appreciate your help! The images I’m producing now look significantly improved, though some still need work. While PR16 was quicker, quality trumps speed for me. Initially, I didn’t find Bing particularly slow, but when it comes to image generation, the aesthetic is crucial. What good is speed if the results are unattractive?

I’d be thrilled if this model becomes permanent. Perhaps it would be best to transition from here on out. I’m a bit anxious about future updates as they might resemble the previous ones. In fact, I temporarily stopped using Bing due to the unsatisfactory generated images. However, the current quality appears excellent. I don’t believe we need more updates that could potentially spoil it again.

In 2023, I noticed Microsoft incorporating the advanced DALL-E 3 technology from OpenAI into their Image Creator within Designer. This upgrade aimed to elevate the quality of images produced by the tool, and it certainly delivered impressive results initially. However, the transformation seemed fleeting as users started complaining about delayed image generation and stricter censorship measures.

Grok AI might get more uncensored with new “Unhinged Mode

Regarding censorship, it appears that Grok, known as the most unrestricted model in its category, might soon introduce an “Unhinged Mode”. Elon Musk, billionaire and owner of X, hinted at this feature for the AI tool back in April 2024. Recent developments suggest that the company could be preparing to launch this new mode, possibly as part of a major update, based on updates to its FAQ page and sharing more details about it (as reported by TechCrunch).

According to the company:

The ‘outspoken’ or ‘uncensored’ setting has been designed to be controversial, impolite, and potentially upsetting, similar to a novice comedian testing his jokes on stage. We trust that your experience with Grok remains informative and enjoyable.”

“The ‘raw’ mode is meant to be blunt, inappropriate, and even offensive at times, much like a greenhorn stand-up comic working out new material. We hope you continue to find Grok insightful and amusing throughout your interaction.

The business may make Unhinged Mode accessible as experimental software, which could restrict its usage to only a small group of people. Unfortunately, Windows Central was unable to gain access to this feature.
