The television series “Dexter: Original Sin” subtly hints at the return of the Ice Truck Killer in a quick and easy-to-miss Easter Egg. Despite the fact that the main character Dexter no longer exists, the show continues to thrive, having been a ratings success for nearly 20 years. In the streaming era, Showtime is investing heavily in it. Initially airing before the big streaming boom, “Dexter” was revived by Showtime in 2021 with a new series called “Dexter: New Blood”. This revival aimed to provide closure for the series in a ten-episode limited series, but due to its popularity, Showtime found it difficult to ignore it.
It appears that Showtime has changed their mind about ending Dexter too early and is now producing new content based on the series. They have greenlit a sequel titled Dexter: Resurrection, a prequel called Dexter: Original Sin, and even a spin-off focusing on the Trinity Killer. Currently, only Original Sin is available, but it’s being well-received by fans. Interestingly, despite having a different actor playing Dexter, viewers seem to be accepting of this revival as they approach the halfway point of season one. Notably, Original Sin features Michael C. Hall as the narrator, which gives the show the feel of a flashback from Dexter’s perspective.
The new show “Dexter: Original Sin” is overflowing with references to the original series, delighting fans. It not only recreates certain flashbacks verbatim from the original program, but also includes characters, humor, and other significant elements that ardent viewers will undoubtedly be thrilled about. There are even subtle hints that some think could be Easter Eggs for Dexter himself, like a potential appearance by the Ice Truck Killer in an earlier episode, though this hasn’t been verified yet. However, the most recent episode of “Dexter: Original Sin” indeed contains an authentic Ice Truck Killer Easter Egg.
Dexter: Original Sin’s Ice Truck Killer Easter Egg
In episode six of “Dexter: Original Sin,” titled “The Thrill of Murder,” there’s a subtle reference to the Ice Truck Killer, easily overlooked. As Dexter pursues Levi Reed, he walks across the street, and in the background, a Miami Chills Ice truck can be spotted passing by. It might seem like an unlikely coincidence, but Miami Chills Ice is not a real brand; it was invented for “Dexter” and doesn’t exist beyond the series. The creators deliberately dressed up a refrigerated truck for a fleeting shot where the focus lies elsewhere.
In a subtle tribute to the show’s ongoing narrative, there’s an appearance of a refrigerated truck similar to the one used by the Ice Truck Killer, a character who was later revealed as Dexter’s brother, in the first season of Dexter. This vehicle was instrumental in transporting and preserving the killer’s victims. Intriguingly, this method created a significant mystery for the Miami police department. Interestingly enough, the Miami Chills Ice truck also makes a cameo in the final episode of Dexter, as Oliver Saxon strolls past one of these trucks. However, this nod to the past may not hold much significance for Dexter at present.
15 years prior to the original “Dexter” series, the storyline of “Dexter: Original Sin” unfolds. Although some fans speculate that Brian Moser was present on the show earlier, it’s unlikely he would be operating one of these trucks at such a young age. In the original series, he obtains the truck without any professional ties to the company. It seems rather unrealistic for him to have stolen a truck like this a decade and a half before his active serial killer days began, as he hadn’t started his killing spree yet.
