Slender Man Case: Morgan Geyser to Be Released 11 Years After Stabbing

A new update has emerged in the Slender Man case, over a decade after the terrifying ordeal.

Approximately eleven years ago, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier tricked their friend Payton Leutner into the woods. There, Geyser repeatedly stabbed Payton with the intention of appeasing the fictional character Slender Man, as they believed he would harm their families if they didn’t comply. Recently, on January 9, a judge in Wisconsin decided that Morgan Geyser, now 22 years old, is mentally stable enough to be released from a psychiatric hospital, according to NBC News.

After admitting guilt in October 2017 for the attempted homicide committed in May 2014, Geyser has been confined at the Winnebago Mental Health Institute for approximately seven years. Now, she is set to be transferred to a group home, where her mental health will continue to be closely monitored. NBC News reported that on January 9, three medical professionals testified to Judge Michael Bohren that Geyser has shown significant improvement, stating that she no longer poses a threat outside the hospital.

Dr. Kenneth Robbins, who is treating Geyser, stated to NBC News that there’s no indication she poses a threat to herself or others. He further added that at this stage, Winnebago might not have many options for her treatment, and it would be beneficial for everyone if they could help her transform into the person she has the potential to become.

He went on to say, “I have a concern that if she’s confined by what Winnebago can provide for her, over time, she might lose hope and even pose a risk to herself. Therefore, it’s possible that she might be safer away from Winnebago.

Forensic psychologist Deborah Collins concurred with Dr. Robbins, commenting that “Ms. Geyser’s compliance within the institution is exceptional” and suggesting, “The longer she stays there now, I believe, the more difficult it will become for her to readjust to normal life.

TopMob News has reached out to Geyser’s lawyer for comment, but has not heard back.

In 2014, Geyser and Weier gained media attention for their assault on Leutner. During this incident, Geyser, who had been friends with Leutner since fourth grade, repeatedly stabbed her (Leutner) 19 times using a kitchen knife. Weier encouraged Geyser throughout the attack. Incredibly, despite these severe injuries, Leutner managed to crawl to the roadside. A passing cyclist eventually spotted her and contacted emergency services by dialing 911.

In August 2017, Geyser admitted guilt for attempted first-degree intentional murder, whereas Weier confessed to an attempt at second-degree homicide due to mental health issues, receiving a sentence of at least three years and up to 25 years in a psychiatric facility. The individual, now aged 23, was initially placed in a mental health institution, but was allowed release in 2021 to live with her father under GPS supervision, as reported by the Associated Press.

Regarding Leutner, she’s been keeping a low profile since the attack and only spoke publicly about it in a 2019 interview with ABC’s 20/20. At that time, she revealed that she kept a pair of broken scissors under her pillow as a precaution. Interestingly, she expressed a sense of gratitude for the experience, stating that if she ever encountered Geyser again, she would likely express initial thanks to her.

Leutner expressed that due to her past experiences, she is living the life she has today. She appreciates it deeply and has a clear direction for the future. At 12, she didn’t have a plan, but now she does because of everything she went through. It may seem unusual for someone who faced what she did to feel this way, but that’s honestly how she feels. If not for that situation, she wouldn’t be the person she is now.
