PlayStation Plus Free Game Compared to GameCube Masterpiece by Fans

Some people playing a free PS5 game from their PlayStation Plus subscription (Extra or Premium) say it’s as good as a popular GameCube game, but those with only the Essential subscription can’t try it because it’s not included in that plan.

In comparison to the two Metroid games on the GameCube – 2002’s Metroid Prime and its sequel Metroid Prime 2: Echoes from 2004 – the free PS5 game available through PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium has been drawn parallel. The original game, Metroid Prime, is often hailed as one of the greatest games ever made, supported by a Metacritic score of 97. On the other hand, while its sequel, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, may not reach the same level of acclaim, it’s still regarded as one of the best titles for the GameCube, with a Metacritic score of 92.

Regarding the comparison of free games on PlayStation Plus with two popular Nintendo titles, let’s discuss Returnal – a 2021 roguelike third-person shooter developed by Finnish studio Housemarque for PlayStation 5. This early PS5 game has garnered an impressive Metacritic score of 86 and is often recognized as one of the top games of 2021. In fact, it was awarded Best Action at The Game Awards that year, and also received nominations for Best Audio Design and Best Game Direction.

Based on a recent post on the PlayStation Plus Reddit forum, “Returnal” has been compared to “Metroid” on the PlayStation platform. This comparison is quite flattering, and given that the post is popular on the PlayStation Plus Reddit page, it’s not a surprising perspective.

I recently switched to PlayStation, at the end of November, as I found the Nintendo Switch games were getting repetitive and I missed playing on a PlayStation. This change led me from having no games to countless titles thanks to PS Plus. Tonight, I started playing Returnal, and it reminds me of the Metroid games for GameCube with that same blend of excitement, eeriness, and frustration I haven’t felt in ages. The roguelike gameplay is an added bonus, making it a fantastic game overall.

The post’s sentiment is echoed by several comments, with some cautioning players that it’s tougher and distinctly different from those classic Metroid games. Yet, there are undoubtedly shared elements, such as their settings, ambiance, and story structures.

In a simplified way: Many comments agree with the post, saying this game is harder and different than old Metroid games, but it also shares similarities in its setting, atmosphere, and story structure.

From the very beginning, I’ve had this game. So far, I haven’t been able to beat the initial boss. I would highly recommend it whenever I get the opportunity.

A different user remarks: “Returnal stands out as extraordinary. The gameplay mechanism, the captivating narrative, the diverse environments, graphics, and audio quality left me spellbound. Despite being released some time ago, I continue to rank it among the finest titles of this console generation.

Players considering Returnal due to PlayStation Plus subscribers’ endorsements should anticipate a game lasting approximately 20 to 30 hours on average. The lower end of this range represents a standard playthrough, while the upper end takes into account exploring additional content within the game. For those aiming for completion, expect around 60 hours with the PS5 version.
