Last week, Xbox unveiled plans for a Developer Direct presentation set for January 23rd. In the announcement, Microsoft revealed that viewers would be taken to an unexpected location to witness a freshly-minted game from another studio. This has sparked excitement among fans who are eager to guess what this mystery game might be. Subsequent to the initial announcement, industry insider Jez Corden hinted that the Xbox Developer Direct event is likely to be much larger than Microsoft is presently suggesting. Corden has since expanded on his comments in a new post on Windows Central, though he hasn’t explicitly revealed what game it will be. Instead, he has dropped a few intriguing clues.
…”I’m not giving away the details, but our sources suggest it could be a fresh addition to an iconic Japanese franchise with a long-standing history. This is likely to excite many fans. Interestingly, Microsoft has been receiving significant backing from regional studios like Square Enix (Final Fantasy), HoYoverse (Genshin Impact), and Sega/ATLUS (Persona) lately. We believe this new game could contribute to this positive trend,” writes Corden.
Just as with any gossip, it’s important to approach this news with caution. There could be errors in Corden’s information, or the game might not live up to the expectations created by the rumors. Still, it’s intriguing that Xbox is being secretive about the game’s origin. Considering the situation, Capcom or Konami appear as the most plausible candidates. Both companies possess a wealth of legendary intellectual properties (IP) that would ignite excitement among fans. For instance, Capcom’s supporters have longed for new installments in the Mega Man and Dino Crisis series, which would be significant. Similarly, Konami’s Castlevania is an IP that desperately needs a comeback, especially given their recent endeavors with Silent Hill and Metal Gear; it makes sense since Castlevania is one of Konami’s most prominent missing IPs in recent years.
During the Xbox Developer Direct, it’s important to understand that a game being showcased doesn’t automatically mean it will be exclusive or published by Xbox Game Studios. For instance, among the three games confirmed, such as “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33“, which is being published by Kepler Interactive and announced for PS5, and “Doom: The Dark Ages” (also confirmed for PS5), it’s evident that they will be available on other platforms as well. The third game, “South of Midnight“, has also been confirmed for the presentation but its platform hasn’t been specified yet.
Based on what’s been revealed so far, the Xbox Developer Direct is definitely worth tuning into; it’s possible that “Doom: The Dark Ages” could be one of the standout games of the year. With the announcement of a new installment in a well-respected series, things could get even more exciting. However, we’ll need to see if the event can live up to the expectations it has generated.
