Severance: John Turturro Reveals Why Christopher Walken Is a Perfect Scene Partner

John Turturro personally advocated for Christopher Walken‘s casting in “Severance” because he was looking forward to collaborating with him once more. During an interview with ComicBook prior to the release of “Severance” Season 2, Turturro disclosed that he was the one who recommended Walken for the role of Burt Goodman. He enjoys working alongside Walken and values their partnership enough to ensure their on-screen dynamic is authentic.

As a longtime admirer of Chris, I’ve had the privilege of working together in numerous projects – we’ve collaborated on screen five times! I directed him for three films, shared roles in two more, and our friendship spans over years. Working with him is simply delightful, and when it comes to playing a character I fall for, having someone genuinely dear to me brings an extra layer of authenticity. The camaraderie we share opens up new creative avenues, and the challenges we encounter in the story add depth and emotion that resonate deeply.

If you’re intrigued, I can share that I’ve collaborated with Walken in a few films directed by Turturro. These include “The Jesus Rolls,” “Romance & Cigarettes,” and “Illuminata.” We acted together in two other projects titled “Gods Behaving Badly” and “Search & Destroy.” Turturro spoke highly of Walken, likening him to a jazz musician. He said, “I enjoy working with him because it’s like guessing how he’ll improvise, how he’ll play his instrument. It’s always a pleasure to collaborate with him.

Regarding the character’s dual personas as portrayed in the series, Turturro commented: “Chris is exceptionally connected to his inner child – we refer to it as ‘innie/outie,’ the internal self and external world. It’s truly captivating to observe him, a seasoned actor, maintaining such youthful exuberance. Working with him is an absolute joy.

Severance” is a science fiction thriller centered around a biotech corporation that has invented a technique to split an individual’s consciousness, ensuring they can’t recall their work hours and can’t take confidential information home. John Turturro portrays Irving Bailiff, a character who underwent the procedure and finds himself drawn to Burt, played by Walken. Their characters are unaware of their respective sexual orientations outside of work, and any relationship between them is strictly prohibited during their waking hours as “innies.

Severance Season 2 premieres on Friday, January 17th on Apple TV+. Season 1 is streaming there now.
