Gather, villains! Before the Avengers join forces against Doctor Doom in the movies ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, Marvel Comics is bringing together Earth’s strongest heroes, and their adversaries, in a nine-issue series titled ‘One World Under Doom‘. This series, penned by writer Ryan North (‘Fantastic Four’) and illustrated by R.B. Silva (‘Captain America: Symbol of Truth’), serves as the main event for Doom since the 2015 ‘Secret Wars’, where Victor von Doom seized the power of the Beyonders to become God Emperor Doom.
In my movie-loving perspective, this time around, the cunning mind of Doctor Doom tricked Doctor Strange into passing on the title of Earth’s most potent Sorcerer Supreme to him in a desperate bid to protect our planet from the imminent vampire invasion during “Blood Hunt”. As our favorite sorcerer embarks on an incredible journey to claim the first-ever Sorcerer Supreme title of Asgard in the tie-in series, “Doctor Strange of Asgard”, Doom will proclaim himself as the Emperor of this world and the ruler of a brand new United Latveria.
In the upcoming battle against Emperor Doom, it’s Sam Wilson’s Captain America who takes center stage from Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World”. Additionally, Red Hulk and the Thunderbolts – making their MCU debuts this year – will focus on defeating the tyrannical ruler in separate series titled “Red Hulk” and “Thunderbolts: Doomstrike”. In an interesting blend of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) storylines, Captain America’s squad in “One World Under Doom” #3 (releasing on April 23) will be comprised of villains previously seen in various movies.
In a surprising turn of events, the newly unveiled Avengers squad is joining forces with some notorious villains. Among them are Baron Mordo, who was portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor in “Doctor Strange” (2016), Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal in “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019) and Alejandro Saab in “What If…?” and Doctor Octopus, reprised by Alfred Molina in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021), and M.O.D.O.K., played by Corey Stoll in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (2023).
In this issue, we have an epic showdown – every character, whether hero or villain, squaring off against Doom. North shared that writing it was a blast, and seeing R.B. Silva’s artwork made it even better. Interestingly, the outcome isn’t what you’d expect, setting up an even more intense battle in the following issue! There are some Doom scenes I’m particularly proud of, given characters like M.O.D.O.K. and Doctor Octopus trying to dethrone Doom for their unique motives.
The synopsis:
The Avengers have clashed with Doom, yet Earth’s vindication is far from over. Not just the noble heroes, but even the malevolent villains abhor Doom’s rule. Consequently, an unprecedented alliance is formed to bring down Doom once and for all!
Meanwhile, a coordinated mystical assault unveils a startling revelation about how Doom seized control of the world, with chilling ramifications suggesting that his grip on it might not be as firm as it seems. Yet, Doom’s indifferent and calculating mind is not the only one eyeing Earth covetously.
One World Under Doom #1 goes on sale Feb. 12.
