One intriguing and distinctive feature of the recently debuted DC Universe by DC Studios is that actors will appear across both animated and live-action productions. As Creature Commandos kicks off the series, many fans are curious if and when characters from this show will emerge in live-action versions, anticipating a seamless transition of voice talents to on-screen portrayals. However, for some actors who played characters that didn’t survive the first season of Creature Commandos, the future of these characters within the DC Universe is less clear. An illustrative instance is Maria Bakalova, who’s increasingly working with James Gunn on multiple projects. Following her portrayal of Cosmo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Bakalova was chosen for Creature Commandos as Princess Ilana, a character specifically created for the series. Intriguingly, at the climax of Creature Commandos’ season finale, it was revealed that Ilana was the actual antagonist orchestrating the show’s events and she met her demise by the end.
It sounds like we might not see Bakalova in the DCU again for now, but there’s plenty of room for her character to develop given her new status. Plus, she could potentially reappear in other roles within the DCU in the future, as Sean Gunn is already playing multiple characters. In an interview ahead of the upcoming Creature Commandos finale, Bakalova discussed her potential future with this growing franchise.
Bakalova shared with us that she’s approaching things gradually, as you never know how things might turn out in the end. Her ultimate goal is to collaborate with James repeatedly throughout her career. She expresses a strong desire to be involved in the emerging DC universe, given that he’s involved. Her expectations for it are high, and the Creature Commandos project serves as proof of this anticipation.
Given the opportunity, I would gladly take on this role or any other project directed by James. To work alongside him and be a part of his team is truly my aspiration.
It appears that if given the choice, Bakalova might continue her journey with DCU indefinitely. Given James Gunn’s penchant for working with his returning actors, it seems likely that we could see Bakalova reappear at some point in the future. However, don’t count on seeing Princess Ilana again.
