TikTok Getting Banned? A Guide to Similar Apps RedNote & Lemon8

Get ready to rebuild your FYP in a whole new way.

Due to the impending TikTok ban in the United States on January 19, as it is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, users of this popular social media platform are pondering where they can find similar content. Although the app itself won’t vanish entirely once the ban takes place, there are several alternatives that fans are considering.

Specifically: RedNote, often referred to as China’s version of TikTok, and Lemon8, an app managed by ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok.

RedNote, known as China’s TikTok counterpart, and Lemon8, an application operated by ByteDance, TikTok’s corporate parent.

Alternative options exist for TikTok users if a ban occurs, as neither can perfectly replicate the beloved social media platform’s experience, but they do provide suitable alternatives.

Here’s everything you need to know about TikTok, RedNote, Lemon8 and more.

Is TikTok getting banned?

The prohibition of TikTok in the U.S. is scheduled for enforcement on January 19 due to its ownership by the Chinese firm ByteDance. Nevertheless, this doesn’t imply that the app will vanish from your device. You can still access the app to view and share content.

If a ban takes effect on or after January 19th, TikTok will no longer be available for download from app stores. Consequently, if you haven’t already downloaded it prior to this date, you won’t be able to get it. Furthermore, the app’s parent company ByteDance will lose the ability to provide updates, implying that the app may become obsolete over time and stop functioning properly.

In the U.S. Senate, Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey has put forward a proposal called the “Extend the TikTok Deadline Act.” This act would extend the deadline for ByteDance to sell the app by an additional 270 days, postponing the potential ban as reported by CBS News. Markey, who supports the app, has also submitted a bipartisan plea to overturn the ban entirely. He argues that the reasons behind the ban are unsubstantiated and infringe upon first amendment rights. Whether or not Markey’s bill will be approved is yet to be determined.

What other apps are like TikTok?

When discussing apps comparable to TikTok, social media enthusiasts generally agree that the top three possibilities are: Meta’s Instagram (which features Reels), RedNote, and Lemon8. For quite some time now, Instagram has been promoting Reels as a rival to TikTok by offering short videos.

RedNote is not a one-to-one TikTok clone, but does offer short-form video.

An alternative to consider is Lemon8, but it shares some resemblances with Pinterest. Given that both are owned by ByteDance, it may encounter challenges akin to those experienced by TikTok.

Some TikTok enthusiasts have proposed returning to Tumblr, a platform that enjoyed peak popularity during the mid-2010s.

What is RedNote?

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’d like to share insights about Xiaohongshu, often referred to as “China’s TikTok” by many. In its homeland, it’s more familiarly known simply as “Little Red Book.” This dynamic platform is proudly owned by the innovative tech company, Xingyin Information Technology, based right here in Shanghai.

RedNote offers features similar to TikTok such as short videos, community interaction, shopping options, and more. Unlike TikTok, the videos don’t automatically play when you open the app, but instead require users to log in first. However, much like TikTok, it personalizes content for each user, aiming to create a similar “For You” page experience by showing content that it thinks each individual will find interesting.

As a committed follower, I’ve observed that the app, initially released in 2013, is now available in Mandarin but has become significantly easier for American users to navigate due to its surging popularity over the past week. This shift coincides with an increase in downloads by Americans who are utilizing the app as a form of resistance against the recent TikTok ban.

Numerous humorous videos featuring “TikTok refugees” have emerged on RedNote, while some have humorously suggested that users departing TikTok were flocking to RedNote and reconnecting with their supposed “TikTok intelligence operative from China.

It is unclear if RedNote will be banned in the future, as it is also owned by a Chinese company.

What is Lemon8?

The app known as Lemon8, initially introduced in Japan back in 2020 under the name Sharee, shares similarities with TikTok and is actually owned by ByteDance.

The app debuted in the U.S. in 2023, offering similar functionalities as TikTok, such as recommended videos, image uploads, and multi-image posts, albeit with a layout resembling Pinterest’s interface.

On TikTok, users have the convenience of using the same account details for Lemon8, allowing them to follow their favorite creators across both sites. To provide personalized content, Lemon8 requests users to disclose their preferences, which in turn helps its system tailor the content displayed according to individual tastes.

In light of the potential ban on TikTok, ByteDance is urging its users to download the app. However, keep in mind that Lemon8 might face a similar fate since it’s also owned by the same Chinese corporation.
