Warning: The events of tomorrow’s Emmerdale episode (January 15, 2025) may reveal key plot points. You can now watch it on ITVX.
This article discusses themes of child sexual abuse that some readers may find upsetting.
As a captivated movie critic, I found myself on the edge of my seat watching the gripping narrative unfold in Emmerdale’s recent episode. Beth Cordingly’s character, Ruby Fox-Miligan, was met with an unimaginable twist as her husband, Caleb Miligan (played by William Ash), revealed the shocking outcome of her DNA test results.
Distraught, Ruby understood that if Caleb wasn’t Steph’s (Georgia Jay) biological father, it meant that her own tormentor, Anthony Fox (Nicholas Day), had abused her during her childhood, which was an unimaginable horror.
Struggling with the predicament, Ruby found it hard to confront the results; however, following an uneasy night, she mustered the courage to read the letter.
However, when Steph stepped down from upstairs, Ruby was momentarily halted in her tracks. Unaware and alone, Steph mused over the possibility that her mother’s odd behavior could be due to menopause.
While observing, Ruby felt confident that Caleb and Steph were a father and daughter, as they exchanged playful conversation during breakfast. Later, she shared this thought with her sister-in-law Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) once more.
It appears that Chas is not fully informed about the situation, but he does know that Ruby was a victim of sexual assault long ago. However, Ruby chose not to examine the outcome and instead prefers to continue hiding her past from herself.
Sadly, the decision wasn’t hers to make as Caleb rummaged through Ruby’s bag, discovering the significant letter instead of painkillers.
Unaware of Ruby’s emotional state, Caleb disclosed to her that Steph wasn’t actually his daughter. This unfortunate revelation, unbeknownst to him, aligned with Ruby’s deepest concerns about Anthony.
In simpler terms, Ruby found it too difficult to reveal the truth, insisting that Steph didn’t require knowing and they could handle the situation themselves. However, an enraged Caleb forced her out of Mill Cottage.
Upon Steph’s arrival home, it became clear that Caleb and Ruby had parted ways permanently this time. He chose to keep the cause of their separation private. In the town, Anthony, known for his unkind nature, extended a helping hand, while Ruby watched from the shadows in the darkness.
Will Caleb ever find out what really happened, and Steph’s true paternity?
