The Alien series has experienced renewed popularity by exploring its own history. Ridley Scott revitalized the movies with a fresh perspective by delving into the backstory of the original 1979 Alien film in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, while director Fede Álvarez continued this narrative in Alien: Romulus, filled with references to the franchise and connecting elements. Simultaneously, Marvel’s Alien comic series have been expanding the series’ lore based on the films, and now the new anthology series, Alien: Paradiso, is introducing a significant character from the franchise as its survivor.
The narrative of “Alien: Paradiso” unfolds on the leisurely planetary settlement of Paradiso, where stringent regulations prohibit any form of weaponry. A shrewd smuggler/arms dealer named Ricky Valentine arrives with his team, intending to seal a lucrative agreement with a cartel that could secure his financial future. Regrettably, this deal involves xenomorph specimens, which are currently being nurtured within live hosts. Tragically, one of these creatures bursts free from its host in the midst of the dining area, causing widespread panic and triggering a rigid quarantine procedure.
In the second installment of Alien: Paradiso, Ricky gradually comprehends the flawed nature of his scheme. The attendees are confined within the dining hall, and Tsula Kane, Ricky’s stern bodyguard, swiftly grabs cutlery such as meat forks, knives, and other sharp utensils to use as weapons. Ricky reprimands Tsula for being overly cautious, but Tsula defends herself by saying she’s resourceful and prudent – and a flashback scene explains why the ominous history of the Alien franchise has turned her into such a person…
Alien Introduces Kane’s Daughter
The initial appearance of the xenomorph in the “Alien” franchise occurred when a Chestburster hatched from an egg implanted in the body of the Nostromo’s executive officer, John Hurt’s character named “Kane”. This unfortunate event took place after Kane encountered and was attacked by one of the facehugger parasites while investigating alien eggs found inside a crashed Engineer ship on LV-426. The crew, including Ellen Ripley, were unaware of the nature of the facehugger or how to remove it. However, the mystery deepened when the facehugger died and Kane woke up, only for their dinner with Kane to turn into a horrific reality as the Chestburster burst out from his body.
In the second installment of “Alien: Paradiso”, it’s revealed that Tsula Kane is indeed the daughter of Thomas Kane, who perished on the Nostromo. A pivotal flashback scene centers around Tsula’s recollection of a Weyland-Yutani corporation representative visiting her mother to explain that due to the nature of Thomas Kane’s death and the Nostromo’s destruction, the company would only honor his basic life insurance policy. This left Mrs. Kane bereft of an explanation for her husband’s demise and without the financial means to support their family. This grim reality served as a harsh lesson to Tsula about the ruthless nature of life, emphasizing our powerlessness against its cruelty.
Through this recent disclosure, “Alien: Paradiso” has unveiled its primary character and central theme. Unlike initially suggested in issue #1, the main character isn’t undercover Colonial Marshals Dash Nanda and Lydia Reeves; instead, it will be Tsula who serves as our “final girl.” The narrative is shaping up to be a cautionary tale about a ‘cycle of violence,’ delving into how the initial xenomorph’s violent emergence and rampage aboard the Nostromo gave birth to a new version of Tsula, ready to inflict the same barbarity upon them. For long-time “Alien” franchise enthusiasts, this is just another intriguing piece that contributes to the larger mystery about where the series may be heading next.
Alien: Paradiso is available at Marvel.
