In a surprising turn of events, six years after it was taken off Netflix, Marvel’s Daredevil has made a comeback on Disney+ under the title “Born Again.” This revival, originating from Marvel Television within the Marvel Studios led by Kevin Feige, continues the storyline from season 3 and follows Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Notably, Matt Murdock, also known as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, donned his costume in 2022’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and 2024’s Echo, while Fisk’s Kingpin was the main antagonist in 2021’s Hawkeye and Echo.
In their initial encounter since the conclusion of Daredevil’s third season in 2018, Fisk acknowledges that it’s not entirely unwelcome to see Murdock once more. “It seems a significant amount of time has elapsed,” he remarks in the recently unveiled trailer. “From what I can tell, you’ve made considerable progress in your life.
In response, the blind lawyer remarks, “I might as well put it that way myself.” Once upon a time, Murdock’s greatest adversary was the Crime Kingpin; now, he will be Mayor Fisk – and there’s going to be some serious repercussions. As we delve back into Hell’s Kitchen, let us explore what we currently know about Daredevil: Born Again, including cast members from the Marvel-Netflix series, plot details, creators, and much more.

What Happened in the Daredevil Season 3 Finale?
Following the imprisoned character Fisk working with the FBI to protect his partner Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer) from his wrongdoings, he set loose the dangerously unstable FBI Agent Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter (Wilson Bethel), acting as his assassin. Subsequently, Fisk falsely accused Matt and Daredevil of being a criminal associate and threatened to reveal Daredevil’s hidden identity and pursue his friends Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson).
As a fervent moviegoer, let me express my thoughts on the captivating dialogue delivered by Daredevil in this scene: “You’re heading back to prison, where you’ll spend the remainder of your wretched existence trapped within bars. Aware that you’ll never again have Vanessa, and that this city has cast you out, rejected you, and defeated you – I, personally, was the one who beat you. You will protect my secret and leave Karen Page, Foggy Nelson, and everyone else alone. For if you don’t, I will make sure your wife suffers the consequences.
If Fisk reveals Daredevil’s identity, it comes to light that Vanessa orchestrated the killing of FBI Agent Ray Nadeem (Jay Ali). In this manner, the Kingpin struck a pact with the Devil. However, by the time of Hawkeye (which is set in December 2024, two years before Fisk becomes New York City Mayor in 2026), Fisk had already been freed from prison.
Who’s in the Daredevil: Born Again Cast?
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that some familiar faces are back in the Netflix series we all love. Charlie Cox is reprising his role as Matt Murdock, also known as Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio will once again bring Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, to life, Deborah Ann Woll returns as Karen Page, Elden Henson will be back as Foggy Nelson, and Wilson Bethel is coming back as Dex/Bullseye. Ayelet Zurer reprises her role as Vanessa Fisk, and Jon Bernthal is set to return as Frank Castle, aka the Punisher. Can’t wait to see them all in action!
In the latest updates for Marvel Cinematic Universe, Margarita Levieva from “The Deuce” is set to portray Matt’s love interest named Heather Glenn. Genneya Walton known for “Never Have I Ever” joins as BB Urich, the daughter of the late Ben Urich, a journalist from “Daredevil” played by Vondie Curtis-Hall in previous series. Nikki James, famous for “Severance”, will take on the role of Kirsten McDuffie, a lawyer and Assistant D.A., who first appeared during the Mark Waid-penned comic run. Lastly, the role of Hector Ayala/White Tiger will be played by the late actor Kamar de los Reyes, previously seen in “One Life to Live”.
Art Froushan (from “House of the Dragon”) is set to portray Buck Cashman, a character known in the comics as Bullet – a powerful gun-for-hire working under Fisk. Zabryna Guevara (familiar from “Gotham”) will be playing Sheila Rivera. Michael Gandolfini (of “The Many Saints of Newark”) is taking on the role of Daniel Blade, an original character who may conceal Byron “Butch” Fisk, Fisk’s gang-linked son and future Kingpin following the events of “Devil’s Reign”.
What Is Daredevil: Born Again About?
According to the official summary, “Matt Murdock, a lawyer who is blind but has extraordinary skills, is working tirelessly for justice through his busy law office. At the same time, Wilson Fisk, a former mob boss, is pursuing political ambitions in New York City. As their hidden pasts come to light, both men are drawn towards an unavoidable confrontation.
Which Comic Books Inspired Daredevil: Born Again?
The title “Born Again” originates from a five-part comic book series written by Frank Miller (of Daredevil fame) and illustrated by David Mazzucchelli. In this narrative, the villain Kingpin uncovers Daredevil’s true identity, Matt Murdock, and subsequently wreaks havoc on his life. Initially, it was Karen Page, a friend and former lover of Matt’s, who sold out this information in exchange for drug use. The story unfolds as follows: Kingpin first faces an IRS audit with his funds being frozen; then he is implicated in paying a witness to falsify testimony. Lastly, a reporter from The Daily Bugle named Ben Urich gets wind of the allegations against Matt Murdock, suggesting that he stands accused of various crimes such as bribery, perjury, and misconduct.
Matt, facing loss of his legal career, impending eviction from his apartment which was later bombed, and pushed to the edge of mental breakdown, contemplates breaking the law by assassinating the Kingpin.
“I have shown him that a man without hope… is a man without fear.”
The series incorporates aspects from recent comic book arcs of “Daredevil,” penned by writers Charles Soule and Chip Zdarsky such as “Mayor Fisk” (issues #595-600 in 2017’s Daredevil) and “Devil’s Reign” (#1-6 in 2022’s Devil’s Reign). The storyline “Mayor Fisk” depicts Wilson Fisk assuming the role of mayor, who, in his first term, cracked down on the city’s vigilantes like Daredevil, Spider-Man, and the Punisher through the enactment of the Powers Act.
As Murdock worked on constructing evidence against Fisk for election manipulation in the District Attorney’s office, he was given an additional task: creating a case against superheroes. (Coincidentally, his hidden identity had been revealed at one point but then concealed again by the offspring of the Purple Man.)
In the storyline known as “Devil’s Reign,” Mayor Kingpin implemented his anti-superhero regulations using a fresh group of Thunderbolts, comprising of officially recognized supervillains such as Shocker, Electro, Rhino, Whiplash, Doctor Octopus, and their leader, U.S. Agent. Additionally, there was the Thunderbolt Units, a specialized police force assigned with maintaining law and order and apprehending any superheroes who violated the Powers Act.
“I’m Daredevil. I make justice. I will save my city from Wilson Fisk.”
Fisk imprisoned Zebediah Killgrave, also known as the Purple Man, using a special device called a “Psycho-Prism.” He then gathered Killgrave’s offspring in an attempt to boost the Purple Man’s mind-controlling abilities and manipulate voters into re-electing Mayor Fisk. With costumed heroes driven underground and Fisk’s Thunderbolts and anti-crime drones maintaining order, New York transformed into a law-abiding but oppressive city during Fisk’s rule.
During this period, Fisk exploited the Purple Man’s abilities to recall Daredevil’s hidden identity. His strategy involved manipulating the citizens of the city with the Purple Man’s mind control, transforming them into an army of individuals imbued with purple powers. This almost pushed Daredevil to the brink of committing murder in a final attempt to put an end to the Kingpin once and for all. However, Elektra persuaded Daredevil to show mercy towards a subdued Fisk. As a result, Fisk’s son Butch took over as the new Kingpin, while Luke Cage stepped into Fisk’s former role as mayor of Harlem.
Who’s the Villain of Daredevil: Born Again?
Occasionally, peace requires disruption and disorder takes over, as Mayor Fisk explains to Murdock in the trailer. During their temporary alliance, an ominous figure arises: Muse, a ruthless serial killer who considers his victims as pieces of art and New York City as his canvas. First introduced in 2016’s Daredevil (Vol. 5) #11, Muse is a shrouded character who left gruesome paintings of blood on city walls and a trail of murdered Inhumans behind. Muse was apprehended but managed to break free from prison during the “Mayor Fisk” storyline, when Matt accepted Fisk’s proposal to serve as his deputy mayor in order to keep tabs on the crime lord.
What Role Does The Punisher Play in Daredevil: Born Again?
In issue #599 of Daredevil, when an artist portraying himself as an Inhuman serial killer murdered six police officers at a mural depicting the Punisher, Mayor Fisk falsely accused Frank Castle of their deaths to fuel his anti-vigilante crusade. As Daredevil put it, Fisk aimed to stir up the citizens against the city’s superheroes because he knew they would resist him fiercely. Murdock tried to persuade Mayor Fisk to let him contact his ally, Daredevil, to bring Muse to justice. Meanwhile, Murdock secretly collaborated with a group of unauthorized superheroes – Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Moon Knight, Misty Knight, and Echo – to overthrow the Kingpin.
In “Born Again”, Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force pursues a fugitive known as Frank Castle, who appears to be wrongfully accused of a high-profile assassination.
“The only hero this city needs… is its king.”
Is Daredevil: Born Again Season 4 of Marvel’s Daredevil?
The upcoming series, titled “Daredevil: Born Again“, serves as a follow-up to “Marvel’s Daredevil” and is set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Similar to its forerunner, this series will carry a TV-MA rating.
Previously, showrunner Dario Scardapane explained to Entertainment Weekly that the secret was to retain the essence of the original Netflix series while evolving it into something completely fresh and innovative.
The main topic we continually discussed was how our show has achieved its success, appealing to a particular audience segment, due to its unique blend of darkness and sinister elements. Cox emphasized that he and Vincent felt it was crucial to preserve this tone, as straying from it could compromise the show’s identity. Consequently, they worked hard to ensure the show catered to an older demographic rather than watering it down for a broader audience. In fact, some parts of the show are darker than what we’ve previously produced.
Who Are the Daredevil: Born Again Creators?
In 2023, after the Hollywood writers’ strike, Dario Scardapane took over as showrunner from series co-creators Matt Corman and Chris Ord, marking a significant change in creative direction.
Previously serving as the writer-executive producer for Marvel-Netflix’s “The Punisher”, Scardapane revamped a legal procedural that was dissimilar to the Netflix version, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Subsequently, Marvel TV enlisted the directing duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, known for their work on “Moon Knight” and “Loki” season 2, to helm the series alongside Michael Cuesta (famous for his work on “Dexter” and “Homeland”), Jeffrey Nachmanoff (“Chicago Fire”, “Lovecraft Country”), and David Boyd (“Friday Night Lights”, “The Walking Dead”).
As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that Scardapane, Ord & Corman, Benson & Moorhead, and Chris Gary are the main producers behind the scenes of “Secret Invasion”. On top of that, Kevin Feige, known for his work on both Deadpool and Wolverine, Louis D’Esposito from She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Brad Winderbaum of X-Men ’97 fame, and Sana Amanat, who has worked on Ms. Marvel, are also involved with Marvel Studios in this production.
