According to Jon Favreau’s accounts, it was the first “Iron Man” trailer shown at San Diego Comic-Con in 2007 that truly established the film’s popularity. On numerous occasions, Favreau has reminisced about the initial apprehension surrounding this movie turning into widespread enthusiasm once the audience saw the thrilling trailer Marvel Studios had crafted for “Iron Man”. Since then, trailers for Marvel Cinematic Universe films have consistently piqued interest and introduced characters such as Black Panther and the Guardians of the Galaxy to the public.
Nevertheless, no studio can boast a flawless marketing history. Over time, Marvel Studios has been associated with some peculiar and lackluster previews. The reasons for these subpar marketing materials are diverse, but they all share the common thread of leaving viewers with a sense of dissatisfaction upon completion. Even years after their initial releases, the seven most disappointing trailers from the Marvel Cinematic Universe remain memorable for this reason.
The Incredible Hulk – Trailer One
Initially, Iron Man’s debut trailer was like a powerful rocket launch, filled with self-assuredness. In contrast, The Incredible Hulk’s marketing campaign began three months before its release with a less exciting trailer. This first trailer for The Incredible Hulk was drenched in darkness and ended with two computer-generated monsters fighting each other. Unfortunately, the editing and music choices in this initial trailer lacked personality. This generic trailer implied that The Incredible Hulk would be more action-focused than Ang Lee’s Hulk, but it also hinted that it might lack the unique personality and creative flair displayed in the earlier film.
The Avengers – Teaser Trailer
Nine Inch Nails is incredibly powerful in its music. The duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, leading the band currently, have created numerous impressive film scores. The idea of blending a popular Nine Ininch Nails song with the first Avengers trailer seemed like it would be a sure success. Regrettably, “We’re in This Together” was awkwardly inserted into this preview and failed to create an impact due to its abrupt entrance without time for proper development. Additionally, the teaser is marred by some significant action sequences that are still unfinished, as well as a scarcity of footage depicting the main team working together.
Ant-Man – Teaser Trailer
The initial trailer for Ant-Man, surprisingly serious for a lighthearted family adventure, left many perplexed. Revealed shortly after filming concluded, this sneak peek predominantly features individuals leisurely strolling through ordinary settings in slow motion. It lacks the usual thrill and joy; instead, it seems Marvel Studios’ marketing team is struggling to prevent viewers from finding the Ant-Man concept amusing.
Avengers: Age of Ultron – Trailer Three
Age of Ultron” with its eerie version of “I’ve Got No Strings” was breathtakingly atmospheric. Unfortunately, the second “Ultron” trailer failed to live up to it. Despite this, when judged on its own merits, the second trailer fell flat because it replaced a tense vibe with excessive generic noise and disorder. Lines meant to be funny like “You incredibly messed up” and “I’m always cleaning up after you guys” didn’t land well. Furthermore, revealing The Vision at the end for the first time didn’t improve things.
Black Widow – Final Trailer
For the Black Widow trailer in question, it faced unique challenges unlike any other MCU trailer, primarily due to the postponement of its initial May 2020 release because of COVID-19. Despite these challenging circumstances, this trailer largely revisits material from earlier previews with a lack of freshness. The background music, which is reminiscent of many previous trailers, also falls short in terms of originality and impact. Given the unparalleled situation, it seems that more inventiveness could have been incorporated into the Black Widow trailer.
Thor: Love and Thunder – Teaser Trailer
In just 90 seconds, the teaser for “Thor: Love and Thunder” re-immersed viewers in the world of the cosmic hero, filled with rock ‘n’ roll vibes and vibrant visuals. Although there were some creative elements in the trailer, such as the recurring shots of Thor running behind a tree symbolizing his growth over time, it seemed somewhat repetitive. The song choice, “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” was a popular one but felt overused for a trailer aiming to convince us why another solo Thor film is necessary. Furthermore, the quirky tagline “Not every God has a plan” hinted at a potential misstep in the movie’s attempt to inject humor and whimsy, which could be problematic.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – Trailer Two
In a return to the big screen after almost eight years since the initial Ant-Man trailer, the second installment, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, has revived this Marvel character in a rather somber manner within its promotional material. It’s intriguing to ponder about the direction of this series, given that comedic actor Paul Rudd is being asked to deliver weighty lines such as “We just both have to lose.” The second Quantumania trailer appears to adhere to a formulaic approach in editing and music selection. In comparison, the exhilarating Guardians of the Galaxy teaser, which introduced those space-faring outlaws to audiences everywhere, seems to have been crafted with more creativity and excitement.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is now streaming on Disney+.
