Following the cancellation of two more live-service PS5 games from Sony, and their subsequent abandonment, PlayStation enthusiasts and gaming media have begun to critically assess the impact of Sony’s Game as a Service initiative, which was unveiled a few years back. The general consensus, with only the Helldivers 2 success story serving as an exception, is that these efforts have been extremely disappointing.
Since 2022, Sony has revealed that it’s been working on 12 live-service games, some from its own studios and others with partnered ones. However, many of these projects have since been scrapped, though Sony hasn’t disclosed their specific names. Based on available information, here’s an overview:
1. Project Athia (from Luminous Productions) – Cancelled
2. Starfield (from Bluepoint Games) – Cancelled
3. Stray (from Bluepoint Games) – Released in July 2022
4. Project Rosheim (from SIE Japan Studio) – Cancelled
5. Rift Apart (from Insomniac Games) – Released in April 2021
6. Gran Turismo 7 (from Polyphony Digital) – Released in March 2022
7. Ghost of Tsushima: Legends (from Sucker Punch Productions) – Still in development, but not a live-service game
8. Project Q (from Housemarque) – Cancelled
9. The Last Guardian 2 (from Japan Studio) – Rumored to be on hold
10. Project Helix (from Naughty Dog) – Unclear if it’s a live-service game or still in development
11. Project Tempo (from SIE San Diego Studio) – Cancelled
12. Dreams (from Media Molecule) – Still in development, but focus shifted to user-generated content and not a live-service game
Please note that the status of some projects might be subject to change as more information becomes available.
- The Last of Us Multiplayer — Cancelled in December 2023
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Great Web — Cancelled on unknown date but part of Insomniac hack in December 2023
- London Studio Live Service Game — Cancelled and developer closed in February 2024
- Twisted Metal — Cancelled in February 2024
- Helldivers 2 — Released in February 2024
- Payback Project from Bungie — Cancelled in August 2024
- Concord — Released in August 2024 but taken offline forever after just two weeks
- Live Service Game from Bend Studio — Cancelled in January 2025
- Live Service God of War Game from Bluepoint — Cancelled in January 2025
- Fairgame$ — Announced in May 2023, still in production
- Marathon — Announced in May 2023, still in production
- Horizon Online — Unannounced but a widely rumoured project
Among the 12 proposed projects, seven of them unfortunately won’t be realized. Given that Concord is no longer playable, we might as well consider eight projects as being shelved. It’s hard to feel optimistic about a live-service title from the God of War universe reaching the market when one from Fairgame$ has been cancelled.
Sony has several single-player games already confirmed for its primary audience, such as Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, Intergalactic, and Marvel’s Wolverine. Beyond these titles, it can be challenging to accurately predict what other projects Sony developers might be working on, as there is often limited information available about their progress. It was thought that Bluepoint Studios was developing a single-player game, but this turned out not to be the case.
In reply to a comment about Sony’s current lineup of big-budget releases appearing bleak, Jason Schreier from Bloomberg countered: “Focusing on creating 12 live-service games might lead to that outcome.” It’s conceivable that PlayStation enthusiasts could be left with just single-player offerings for quite some time.
