Firewalk Studios’ “Concord” is recognized as one of Sony‘s most significant flops in their history, reportedly selling just 25,000 copies after its release. The game was withdrawn from sale approximately two weeks later, leading to the eventual closure of servers and the studio itself. Not only did this project reportedly exceed its budget and drain resources, but its influence is said to linger, particularly in Sony’s subsequent projects.
In the most recent Game Mess podcast, Jeff Grubb from GiantBomb shared that the live-service games abandoned by Bluepoint Games and Bend Studio were allegedly connected to ‘Concord’. Essentially, he stated that Concord was the reason for this, and it appears to be a known fact based on what he’s been informed.
Following the impact from Concord, Sony is reevaluating all their projects at various studios. There’s resistance towards any live-service projects, making it difficult for them to be released.
Additionally, he mentions that these were the primary initiatives from both studios, aligning with projects such as shelved multiplayer games for The Last of Us and Marvel’s Spider-Man, the anticipated Twisted Metal remake, and Sony London’s mythical role-playing game in the fantasy genre.
Sony has confirmed that the cancellations won’t lead to studio closures, however, potential job reductions remain uncertain. Discussions about the future are being prepared, so keep an eye out for more information soon.
