TikTok Ban Delayed by President Trump (But the Clock Is Ticking)

The postponement of the TikTok ban by President Trump lessens immediate worries, but there’s a possibility that a settlement might not be reached. With over 170 million active users in the U.S., TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms globally. It’s been shaping the social media sphere for nearly a decade due to its innovative approach to content delivery. While live streams and other types of content are available on TikTok, it’s primarily recognized for its engaging algorithm that delivers bite-sized videos tailored to users. This unique feature has inspired platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube to adopt similar content recommendation systems.

In 2020, Donald Trump sought to prohibit TikTok, stating “national security” concerns. Some people believed he was bluffing or assumed the Biden administration would reverse this decision, but they did not. Instead, the Biden administration persisted in implementing the ban. TikTok was given a choice: sell to an American company or be banned in the U.S by January 19th. TikTok decided to face the ban and shut down on the 18th. However, just hours later, on the 19th, TikTok resumed operation. The Chinese-owned social media platform explained that Trump had pledged to resolve the issue and promised TikTok immunity if it resumed service.

Following Donald Trump’s inauguration, he has issued an executive order to temporarily postpone the implementation of the TikTok ban for 75 days. He expressed hope that a deal might be reached, but hinted at potential tariffs on China if negotiations fail. However, there are doubts about whether the President can effectively suspend enforcement of federal law in this manner. It remains uncertain whether Trump’s order has legal validity over time. If the executive order does not override the law, TikTok could face another ban until a U.S. buyer is found.

In a similar vein, ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, has ceased operation for the mobile game Marvel Snap. This action was prompted by the TikTok ban and it has stayed closed since last Saturday, even though TikTok resumed operations. It’s predicted that Marvel Snap will restart operations shortly after the executive order was released. However, if Marvel Snap faces the same examination as TikTok, there’s a possibility it could be shut down again if the executive order is found to be invalid.
