It appears that many people are not fond of the recent changes in Microsoft 365’s name and logo. The initial rebranding of Microsoft Office to Microsoft 365, which seemed to dilute its long-established brand identity, has been followed by another rebrand, this time adding “Copilot” to Microsoft 365’s name. This move has sparked confusion among users.
Together with the fresh rebrand, Microsoft has unveiled a new logo for the sleek “Microsoft 365 Copilot” identity. Now, allow me to present to you the creation that emerged from their design studios:
I promise, this is not a joke.
The logo presented is indeed the new Microsoft 365 Copilot; however, it seems somewhat disjointed as it overlays a box with “M365” text on top of the original Copilot chat service logo. This design might cause confusion between Microsoft 365 as an Office suite and the standalone Copilot chat service. Additionally, the small size and placement of the “M365” text in the image may have made it challenging for you to read clearly.
Users have pointed out that on computers with screens having a low resolution, the text within the Microsoft 365 Copilot icon is nearly illegible when pinned to the Taskbar. As the pixel density decreases, it becomes increasingly difficult to decipher what the text in the icon actually spells out. It frequently appears as M366, M355, MJEG, or any other mix of letters between these options.
Is it a significant issue? Not particularly. However, it does bring attention to Microsoft’s lackluster approach towards design. It seems they haven’t devoted much time or consideration to this icon, leading to a final product that is hard to read and not accessible for all users.
On a Surface Laptop Go, a laptop manufactured by Microsoft, the text within the icon can be quite challenging to discern. If you weren’t aware that it reads “M365”, you might have significant trouble deciphering its meaning. This could pose a problem since most of the logo resembles an entirely different service, potentially leading to confusion for users.
Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot are not the same thing. Microsoft 365 Copilot is a suite of applications like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, and others, whereas Copilot is a chat service that generates content. I must admit, the rebranding doesn’t seem to follow a clear logic. It would be helpful if they had separate icons that clearly distinguish one from the other without relying on text.
It appears that Microsoft has become overly focused on Copilot recently, which is unfortunate. While Copilot is decent, I don’t believe it will gain widespread popularity. By investing in a product that’s already competing in a densely populated market, and with no Windows mobile or wearable platform, Microsoft is taking on a fight it can’t win. Merging Copilot into the Microsoft 365 brand won’t change this reality.
While it’s debatable, it seems that many individuals don’t place significant importance on Copilot. It can be useful in certain situations, but its power doesn’t appear robust enough for Microsoft Office to entirely hinge upon it as a core component.
