Get ready for a thrilling revival! Instead of Batman and Robin, it’s the renowned X-Men duo, Wolverine and Kitty Pryde, who are taking center stage in their own team-up series! The talented Chris Claremont, an iconic X-Men comics writer, is penning this exciting new adventure.
Marvel has made the announcement officially today, revealing that Damian Couceiro will be illustrating the book, while Alan Davis, another celebrated X-Men artist, will create select covers for the series. Rickie Yagawa, Marcus To, and Adi Granov are also part of the team as variant cover artists.
The five-issue limited series titled Wolverine and Kitty Pryde is set to launch on April 30th.
The book is set to follow another thrilling Marvel journey, with Claremont revisiting untold events from Logan and Kitty’s past, particularly their time in Japan, as portrayed in the famous “Kitty Pryde and Wolverine” limited series by Claremont and Al Milgrom (1984-1985). In a nutshell, the plot summary hints at:
During Kitty Pryde’s voyage to Japan, where she almost surrendered her soul to Ogun, it was Wolverine who stepped in to guide the youngest X-Man towards righteousness. However, an enigmatic menace puts their lives at risk as they reside with Mariko Yashida. To safeguard those dear to them, they will need to draw upon their collective mutant abilities, ninja training, and combat skills!
If you’re not deeply versed in the lore of the X-Men (and you don’t need to be, necessarily): A crucial shift in Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat’s character took place in the limited series “Kitty Pryde and Wolverine”; Kitty was controlled by a mutant ninja and psychic named Ogun who trained her as an assassin for his purposes. It was up to Wolverine to save Kitty and release her from Ogun’s control, which he did through intense mentor-student interactions. This experience left an indelible mark on both characters, and their bond deepened significantly. More recently, this darker aspect of Kitty’s character reemerged in the finale of the X-Men’s Krakoa Era, where she once again took up her ninja skills to ruthlessly eliminate leaders who were hostile towards mutants.
After spending some time together in Japan, Kitty Pryde and Wolverine eventually rejoined their fellow X-Men. Now, Chris Claremont is going to share an “unspoken” chapter of the tale that unfolded between the last moments depicted in the final pages of Kitty Pryde and Wolverine, and when these characters reappeared in the issues of Uncanny X-Men (#192).
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but feel thrilled about diving back into this captivating narrative thread. And what makes it even more enticing is the fact that Damian Couceiro, an artist of exceptional talent, is the one bringing it to life. This isn’t just a continuation; it’s the intriguing tale of what unfolds between the finale of the initial Kitty Pryde and Wolverine mini-series and their eventual return home to rejoin the X-Men. Spanning over five issues, this isn’t a simple storyline, but rather a rich tapestry filled with unexpected twists and turns!
Marvel Comics Editor Mark Basso made a statement, explaining, “Certainly, the miniseries featuring Kitty Pryde and Wolverine is legendary, as it shows Kitty’s transformation from a junior X-Man to a fully developed hero upon her return to New York. However, there was an apparent gap between the resolution of the Ogun situation and when Wolverine and Kitty arrived in New York in Uncanny X-Men #192. We were excited that Chris was eager to fill in those missing chapters, answering questions like why Kitty had such a changed mindset upon their return, and even addressing where Kitty’s father disappeared to. Now you’ll get to find out.”
Wolverine and Kitty Pryde #1 will hit shelves on April 30th.
