It’s exciting news for fans of Japanese drama: Stories International has teamed up with TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System Television) to re-create a selection of their popular shows for international viewers. This partnership, announced today, is part of a strategic collaboration aimed at producing English-language adaptations of well-loved series like “Eye Love You”, “Tokyo MER”, and “Unnatural”. The plan is to choose 40 out of TBS’s over 500 dramas to reimagine, but with the same storylines and a Hollywood-level budget. These critically acclaimed stories will then be distributed globally through the efforts of Stories International, which has offices in both Tokyo and Los Angeles.
Stories International, known for producing everything from TV series to advertisements to branded entertainment, is now working on bridging an accessibility gap by introducing popular Japanese dramas to a broader audience through one of Japan’s biggest names. Following the success of Netflix’s Alice in Borderland and TBS’ Unnatural, there seems to be a promising opportunity for Japanese dramas to captivate audiences much like the Korean drama sensations that have emerged recently. By collaborating with a network consistently among Japan’s top five most-watched television channels, Stories International may be setting itself up for something significant.
Stories International and TBS Plans to Bring 40 J-Dramas to Global Audiences
Although we don’t know which 40 TV shows will ultimately be selected, Stories International’s collaboration with TBS promises an exciting variety of content in the near future. TBS, known for hosting popular shows like Ninja Warrior and Takeshi’s Castle, has already made a name for itself as a prominent Japanese television network. Its extensive collection of drama content only adds to its appeal. For those who recognize it, Takeshi’s Castle is the same one that was adapted for American audiences as MXC; this partnership, however, promises to be far more ambitious than just a humorous dubbing.
Tomoya Suzuki, CEO of Stories International, spoke about their partnership, expressing his delight at teaming up with TBS, a pioneer in Japanese TV dramas. Looking ahead, they are eager to collaborate with skilled writers and producers to develop tales that captivate audiences globally.
Jun Fukai, Director at TBS’s Global Business Development Department, additionally made comments, expressing, “TBS has a rich history of producing captivating scripted content, and we believe that our collaborative method for development, coupled with the Stories team’s commitment to authentic storytelling, will make our IPs stand out on a global level.
Given the success of global sensations such as “Squid Game”, there’s been talk about an English version produced by David Fincher, which could pave the way for more adaptations of acclaimed Japanese TV series. This move is likely to draw attention to TBS’s collection of shows and boost international interest in Japanese dramas overall.
