In a significant comeback, Cameron Diaz’s latest movie “Back in Action,” which marked her return to acting after a decade, has become an unprecedented success on Netflix. Ever since its premiere on the streaming platform on January 17th, it has held the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 Movies list. The data reveals that “Back in Action” garnered a staggering 46.8 million views during its debut and was watched for an impressive 88.9 million hours. These figures far surpass the competition; the second-placed film, the animated sequel “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” only managed 8.9 million views and 12.7 million hours. Interestingly, “Back in Action” was the most popular movie in as many as 85 countries worldwide.
This week, it seems that Netflix viewers were craving action movies featuring Cameron Diaz. In fourth place was the 2010 film “Knight and Day,” directed by James Mangold, which teamed Diaz with Tom Cruise. For the second week in a row, “Knight and Day” ranked among the Top 10 most-watched titles, garnering 5.2 million views and logging 9.5 million hours of viewing time.
In the movie “Back in Action”, Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz reconnect as they played characters together in “Annie”. They portray two ex-CIA agents who are compelled to abandon their peaceful civilian lifestyles and take on a perilous assignment when their secret identities are exposed. Foxx enthusiastically revealed the project in 2022, generating anticipation for Diaz’s comeback to acting. Notably, “Annie” was her final role before she departed from the entertainment industry.
Cameron Diaz’s return to Hollywood isn’t just for the short term, as she has several other ventures underway. She will be working alongside Keanu Reeves in Jonah Hill’s film “Outcome,” which is now in post-production. Additionally, Diaz is slated to reappear as Princess Fiona in the forthcoming “Shrek 5,” due for release in December 2026. Furthermore, she has shown interest in a “Mask” sequel if Jim Carrey is on board with it as well.
Regardless of the largely unfavorable ratings it received on Rotten Tomatoes (26%), the film “Back in Action” managed to pull in a significant number of Netflix viewers, possibly due to enthusiasm over Cameron Diaz returning as the leading actress. It will be intriguing to observe if this movie’s success could lead to a potential sequel. Given that Netflix has a history of creating follow-ups for movies that resonate with audiences (such as “Extraction” and “Murder Mystery”), it wouldn’t be surprising if they were to consider producing a “Back in Action 2”. In fact, “Back in Action” garnered more views during its debut than the massive hit “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” (41 million views vs. 80.7 million hours viewed).
With “Back in Action,” Foxx’s collaboration with Netflix scores another success. The versatile actor has appeared in several Netflix films that have garnered impressive viewership; titles such as “Day Shift,” “They Cloned Tyrone,” and “Project Power” quickly climbed the streaming platform’s charts upon release. Given this track record, it seems likely that both parties will be keen to work together again, whether it’s a sequel to “Back in Action” or another project altogether.
