Filmmaker Robert Eggers has chosen his next project after the success of “Nosferatu“. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Eggers will collaborate with Focus Features once more for a movie titled “Werwulf”, which, as its name implies, is a werewolf-themed film that continues Eggers’ focus on horror and otherworldly elements. “Werwulf” is scheduled to hit theaters on Christmas Day in 2026, mirroring the release date of “Nosferatu”. Unlike “Nosferatu”, which was released in black-and-white, “Werwulf” will be filmed in color. Preliminary information suggests that the story takes place in 13th century England.
Focus Features, a branch of Universal Studios, has played a crucial role in all of the projects by filmmaker Michael Chabon Eggers, which encompass films such as Nosferatu, The Northman, The Witch, and The Lighthouse – one of his earlier ventures. The upcoming film Werwulf is jointly penned by Eggers and Sjón, a partnership that blossomed during the scripting process for The Northman. Chris and Eleanor Columbus will serve as executive producers on this project.
Nosferatu, featuring Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Foe, Bill Skarsgard, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, is a Dracula remake that has been highly acclaimed by some as the greatest adaptation ever made. This title is quite prestigious. Regardless, there’s no doubt that Werwulf, following the success of Nosferatu, will generate substantial interest. In fact, during its five-day debut over Christmas week, Nosferatu raked in more than $40 million at the box office.
More recently, Eggers shared insights on how the concluding scene between Count Orlok and Ellen Hutter in the film “Nosferatu” deviated from its ultimate portrayal. When questioned about the characters’ embrace at the end and whether it served as a suitable conclusion to the tale, Eggers confirmed that this had always been the intended ending.
Despite my efforts to determine how Orlok’s death would be depicted, that concluding scene was always meant to be the end,” Eggers shared with Variety. “It’s satisfying to have our unique take on the ‘Death and the Maiden’ theme. I believe it turned out quite well visually.
In fact, the final movie didn’t fully capture the gruesomeness of Orlok’s scenes as Eggers had originally intended. He mentioned earlier that certain elements were too disturbing, but later clarified that they were significantly bloodier in the early stages.
As a cinephile, I’d like to point out a detail you might’ve missed: Orlok, even after the cut, is still oozing blood from his eyes, ears, and nostrils. There are maggot-ridden holes on his back that add to the chilling effect. We even managed to make him bleed through his posterior for an extra touch of horror, but it ended up being rather amusing. When we began filming, we had to stuff a cork in there to keep things under control.
Nosferatu is available on digital and arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on February 18th.
