All 9 Confirmed Cast Members for the Children of Blood and Bone Movie

I’m thrilled to share that the long-awaited film adaptation of “Children of Blood and Bone” is gradually materializing, with exciting updates emerging recently. Just this week, four talented actors were announced for key roles—Thuso Mbedu, Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris, and Tosin Cole. They join an impressive ensemble that already includes Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Idris Elba, Lashana Lynch, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. As per Variety’s latest report, negotiations are underway for three more cast members: Regina King, Diaana Babnicova, and Bukky Bakray. The movie is an adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s best-selling novel and will be helmed by the accomplished Gina Prince-Bythewood. With a scheduled release date of January 15, 2027, this promises to be an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Children of Blood and Bone” is a fantasy novel for young adults, drawing inspiration from Nigerian legends and tales. It’s set in the imaginary kingdom of Orïsha, home to an oppressed group known as divîners who possess magic abilities, alongside non-magical inhabitants. The protagonist, Zélie Adebola, finds herself embarking on a mission to reintroduce magic into the kingdom and bring balance back to life.

Zélie will be acted by Mbedu, who previously collaborated with the director on “The Woman King”. Cole will portray Zélie’s elder brother Tzain, while Stenberg and Idris Elba will depict Princess Amari and Prince Inan, the king’s children. Interestingly, Stenberg’s casting holds a special significance as Adeyemi revealed he was partially inspired to write this book due to the racial opposition Stenberg faced during her casting in “The Hunger Games”.

Davis is set to portray Mama Agba, while Erivo takes on the role of Admiral Kaea. Elba will assume the character Lekan, Lynch will depict Jumoke, and Ejiofor will embody King Saran. Negotiations are ongoing for King to play Queen Nehana, Babnicova to portray Folake, and Bakray to portray Binta. The production is anticipated to commence within the next few weeks.

The first book in this trilogy, titled “Children of Blood and Bone“, came out in 2018. This was followed by “Children of Virtue and Vengeance“. If a third book named “Children of Anguish and Anarchy” is ever written, it would complete what is currently known as the “The Legacy of Orïsha Trilogy“. Currently, Paramount Pictures has only agreed to make one movie based on this series. The outcome for potential sequels depends on how well the first film performs.

Initially, Fox 2000 Pictures secured the rights to make a film based on this adaptation, but when Disney bought 21st Century Fox, the project got overlooked. Later, it was moved to Lucasfilm and left unattended for many years. Eventually, the rights expired, and Paramount picked them up, leading to renewed activity on the movie production.

Currently, copies of “Children of Blood and Bone” as well as the author’s additional works can be found in various formats including print, digital, and audio books. The movie adaptation is slated for release in cinemas on January 15, 2027.
