Ocean’s 14: New Director, But Will the Original Cast Return?

Warner Bros. is considering David Leitch to helm the upcoming “Ocean’s Fourteen.” According to recent news, Leitch, known for his action-packed films such as “Atomic Blonde” (2017), “Deadpool 2” (2018), “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” (2019), “Bullet Train” (2022), and the upcoming “The Fall Guy” (2024), is in discussions to direct the next installment of the Ocean’s series. If selected, Leitch will replace Steven Soderbergh, who directed the Ocean’s trilogy, and oversaw the female-led spinoff “Ocean’s 8,” which rekindled the once dormant franchise in 2018.

George Clooney, under the production company Smokehouse Pictures that he runs, will once again step into the shoes of charismatic swindler Danny Ocean. Joining him are his high-rolling associates: Brad Pitt as master thief Rusty Ryan, Matt Damon as agile pickpocket Linus Caldwell, and Casey Affleck as Virgil Malloy, half of a contentious twin brother duo with Scott Caan’s Turk.

Recently, Brad Pitt and George Clooney worked together again on Jon Watts’ film “Wolfs”. Meanwhile, David Leitch directed Brad Pitt in “Bullet Train” and Damon in “Deadpool 2”. Notably, David Leitch has a background as a stuntman, having performed stunts for the movie “Bourne Identity”, where Matt Damon was the lead, and also served as a double for Brad Pitt in the 2001 film “Ocean’s Eleven.

2007’s Ocean’s Thirteen found me, as a cinephile, joining forces with an extraordinary cast that boasted the likes of Basher (Don Cheadle), Frank (Bernie Mac), Livingston (Eddie Jemison), Yen (Qin Shaobo), Saul (Carl Reiner), and benefactor Reuben (Elliott Gould). The talented Julia Roberts took on the role of Danny’s wife Tess, while Andy García portrayed casino owner Terry Benedict. Unfortunately, in the nearly two decades since then, Bernie Mac and Carl Reiner have left us; their appearances in Ocean’s 8 were initially planned, but sadly, their scenes were ultimately removed from the final cut.

In the final version of that movie, there were two brief appearances by members of Danny’s team: Reuben and Yen, who had connections with Danny’s sister, Debbie (played by Sandra Bullock). It remains to be seen if the next film, Ocean’s Fourteen, might involve some of Debbie’s team members, such as Lou (Cate Blanchette), Daphne (Anne Hathaway), Amita (Mindy Kaling), Tammy (Sarah Paulson), Constance (Awkwafina), Rose (Helena Bonham Carter), and Nine Ball (Rihanna).

Back in 2021, I heard rumblings from none other than Cheadle himself about a potential fourth installment of the Ocean’s series, with Soderbergh mulling it over – that is, until we tragically lost Mac in 2008.

Originally, we had discussed the idea, but then Bernie departed, and shortly after, we felt strongly against pursuing it. However, during a recent filming (No Sudden Move), Stephen mentioned there might be a possibility for another attempt. He’s been contemplating it. At this point, the idea didn’t progress much further. But I’m not sure who else would be involved. I suspect our main group would return. It could be intriguing to see what develops.

Next year, it was disclosed that Warner Bros. had commenced working diligently on a fresh installment of the Ocean’s franchise, this time as a period film. The project is being helmed by director Jay Roach (Bombshell) alongside Margot Robbie, who starred in Barbie and produced it, and Gosling, from Fall Guy. However, there’s uncertainty about whether the prequel set in the 1960s is progressing. Concurrently, Warner Bros. has reserved release dates for three unnamed films: March 26, 2027, July 23, 2027, and Dec. 17, 2027.
