Star Wars: Episode I: Jedi Power Battles Interview – Controls, Gameplay Improvements, and More

Aspyr, a renowned studio, specializes in reviving old favorites such as the Tomb Raider series from numbers 4 to 6, and more recently, they’ve been focusing on porting the classic Star Wars game, Star Wars: Episode I – Jedi Power Battles, onto contemporary systems. In this discussion, Chris Bashaar, Aspyr’s product director, shares insights about the project, including their reasons for choosing it and the enhancements we can anticipate in terms of user experience.

In addition to enhanced visuals, we’ve incorporated thrilling elements such as a lightsaber control option and new character options for gameplay.

Why has the choice been made to re-release Star Wars: Episode I – Jedi Power Battles again, so many years later?

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been fortunate enough to collaborate closely with Lucasfilm Games for quite some time now. This partnership has granted me the opportunity to share an array of Star Wars video games with fellow fans, including our latest addition, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter.

Jedi Power Battles, originally released in 2000, is cherished by many who adore the universe of Star Wars. When we spotted a chance to reintroduce this well-loved game, we aimed to elevate the gaming experience for both veteran fans and fresh players. To do so, we’ve upgraded the visuals, and included thrilling new elements such as the lightsaber toggle and new playable characters.

Could you give us some insights on the updated control system compared to the initial game, and explain the key differences between them?

As a gamer diving into Jedi Power Battles, I appreciate the fresh control scheme overhaul. Instead of the traditional B button being used for jumping, it’s now dedicated to attacks, making the learning curve smoother for newcomers like me.

As a fan myself, I can’t help but feel thrilled by the fact that this game offers the best of both worlds. For those who yearn for the good old days, there’s the classic control scheme available, making it easy to switch between contemporary and vintage playstyles. This versatility not only makes the game feel modern and inviting for newcomers but also pays homage to its rich history, ensuring that long-term fans like myself get our nostalgia fix.

For fans who enjoy the old-school charm, both the traditional and contemporary control schemes have been included. This means you can effortlessly transition between them as you play.

What major enhancements and user-friendly features can players anticipate in the gameplay, regarding both game mechanics and overall experience?

We’ve thoroughly enjoyed testing out the updated controls and can hardly contain our excitement for you to try it with newly playable characters! You’ll soon have the chance to dive into the fray as the Rifle Droid, Staff Tusken Raider, Ishi Tib, and numerous others. The inclusion of both ranged and melee attacks adds an entirely new layer to combat, while the lightsaber color customization allows you to tailor your Jedi adventure. With added personalization options and fresh ways to wield the Force, we’re eagerly anticipating how players will make use of these enhancements!
