Final Fantasy VII Remake Part Three currently nine months into development, not next-gen exclusive

In a recent update, the third instalment of the “Final Fantasy VII Remake” series, which comes after “Final Fantasy VII Remake” and “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth”, is now approximately nine months into its development process, as confirmed by director Naoki Hamaguchi.

Concerning the third installment of “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth”, development commenced directly following its completion, estimated to be around March or April 2024. This means we’ve been working on it for approximately nine months according to Hamaguchi during an interview for the PC release of “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth”. The main objective for 2024 was to refine the gameplay experience intended for the third installment of the “Remake” project, resulting in a build that aligns well with the team’s collective direction and vision.

From 2025 onwards, we’ve been working diligently on constructing and polishing our game according to our predefined blueprint. Development is proceeding well, sticking to the timeline I initially set. I can’t give an exact date for when more details will be revealed, but keep your eyes open for updates.

In his words, Yoshinori Kitase explained, “For large RPGs with a strong narrative, the development speed largely hinges on whether the story has been completely fleshed out. As for the third game’s tale, once I received the script from Kazushige Nojima, I requested that it be more comprehensive since this is the concluding chapter. We recently finished that aspect, which gives me confidence that we’re making steady progress.

Initially, “Final Fantasy VII Remake” was launched exclusively for PlayStation 4. Contrastingly, the sequel, “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth,” skipped the PlayStation 4 and made its debut on PlayStation 5. When questioned if the subsequent game might continue this pattern of exclusivity to the next-gen consoles, Kitase reassured fans by saying, “Don’t worry about that next time.” In simpler terms, there’s no need for concern regarding the next game being exclusive to only the latest console generation.

Previously during the conversation, 4Gamer.net inquired Hamaguchi about the reason behind the sequential launches of the Final Fantasy VII Remake games on PC, instead of simultaneous releases with their PlayStation counterparts.

Hamaguchi stated, “Initially, it’s crucial to acknowledge that the ‘Final Fantasy’ brand, along with Square Enix, has fostered a robust collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment. I sincerely hope this relationship persists in the future. Nevertheless, we no longer reside in an epoch where restricting the platforms for play exclusively benefits significantly. In fact, we’ve been witnessing a growing trend of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s games being made available on PC, alongside PlayStation 5.

Via our ‘Remake’ initiative, we’ve noticed a significant change in direction. As a company, we’ve publicly stated our focus on multiplatform development. Consequently, future intellectual properties will follow this model, leading me to think that simultaneous or near-simultaneous console and PC releases are imminent in the future.

In the latter part of the interview, following Kitase’s statement about the third game not being limited to next-gen consoles, Hamaguchi expressed, “Just as I mentioned earlier, Square Enix intends to distribute games on multiple platforms in the future. At this stage, I can’t guarantee anything, but our goal is to make our games accessible to a vast audience, so we’ll strive to achieve that.

The initial release date for the game “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth” was set for February 29, 2024, on the PlayStation 5. Today marks its launch on both Steam and the Epic Games Store for personal computer users.
