As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled about the upcoming release of “Fantastic Four: First Steps”. The cast and crew have shared some tantalizing insights into the movie, but these tidbits might stir up a bit of apprehension.
According to a special interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director of Fantastic Four: First Steps, Matt Shakman, has shared that this upcoming movie will not follow the traditional path of an origin story.
He explained, ‘What sets our approach apart is that instead of following their transformation and beginning where they’ve already changed, we’re crafting a fresh narrative. There are established stories that build up to that point, don’t there? We decided to create an entirely new storyline from the end of Act 1. Instead of following the conventional path, we chose to start anew.’ So, our tale begins after that significant event.
As a movie buff, I must admit that Kevin Feige’s announcement of the film set in an alternate universe has piqued my curiosity – and perhaps raised some alarms for others. The multiverse is indeed a fascinating concept, but only if it’s executed skillfully and stays true to the original source material. However, given Marvel and Disney’s past history, there’s always a chance they might veer away from the source material entirely.
But then again, it wouldn’t be the first time.
In my humble opinion as a film enthusiast, Matt Shakman has an impressive resume, having directed episodes for shows like “The Great,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Fargo,” and “Game of Thrones.” However, his involvement in “WandaVision” on Disney Plus raises some eyebrows. This series revolved around the complex character of Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch), who displayed villainous actions that were ultimately pardoned in the final episode. While the show garnered praise from critics, it sparked a heated debate among Marvel fans, leaving them divided.
This raises questions as to what else he plans to do with Fantastic Four: First Steps.
While we don’t have any specifics, we can at least speculate based on what cast members have said.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays Ben Grimm in the series, recently discussed his on-set experiences. In a chat with Jimmy Kimmel, the host enquired if Ebon had ever uttered the character’s famous phrase “It’s clobbering time!” while filming.
The actor replied, flashing a mischievous smile, “I subtly inserted it a couple of times.” He added, “Let’s wait and see how things turn out. In this case, I don’t have the final say in the editing process.
According to what was shared, there’s a possibility that the director could decide to eliminate the catchphrase altogether. If this turns out to be true, it might indicate some concerns for the movie or Ben Grimm. Catchphrases are crucial to their characters, and without The Thing’s catchphrase, his character would undergo significant change.
In a recent chat about my latest flick, “Wolf Man,” I, as a movie reviewer, was intrigued by Julia Garner’s thoughts on her portrayal of the Silver Surfer character she might one day play.
During her conversation with Entertainment Weekly, she shared: “I don’t have much to share about that production. However, let me tell you, I feel incredibly fortunate to be involved in it. The Fantastic Four are truly fantastic – they’re extraordinary in this version. I can hardly wait for everyone to see them! As for the Silver Surfer, I expect him to shine just as brightly as he has in past adaptations and the comics. That’s about all I can say.
From her comments, there’s a lot to understand. It seems that she may be familiar with the Silver Surfer solely because of his “shiny” nature. However, it’s merely speculation at this stage as to whether that’s all she knows about the character.
Regardless, it’s understandable for Marvel enthusiasts to feel apprehensive. Given the current information, there’s a possibility that the upcoming Fantastic Four film may not live up to its name.
