In the summer of 2025, the Duffer Brothers revealed they plan to move away from Netflix. Although they’ve signed a new agreement to create additional shows and films, they still have a few projects to launch with Netflix before leaving the platform.
Even though the fifth and final season of Stranger Things aired on December 31st, fans have more to anticipate from creators Matt and Ross Duffer. According to Netflix’s Tudum, the duo have three new shows planned for release in 2026.
I’m really excited about the new animated series, Stranger Things: Fales From ’85. It takes place right after Season 2 and before Season 3, during a really cold winter in 1985. It’s great because it features a lot of the characters we already love – Eleven, Mike, Will, Max, Lucas, Dustin, and even Hopper – and fills in some of the gaps between those seasons.
When the first images of the animated series were revealed, Ross Duffer hinted at the creative freedom it allows. He explained that showrunner Eric Robles and his team were able to fully explore their imaginations – and they did just that.
Another upcoming project is the sci-fi drama The Boroughs. This eight-episode series takes place in a beautiful retirement community in the New Mexico desert. The story follows a surprising group of heroes who must work together to protect their most valuable asset – time – from a mysterious, otherworldly danger.
The creators of Stranger Things have announced a new project. Although the characters in their upcoming show, The Boroughs, are a bit older than those in Stranger Things, they’re just as charming and unique. They promise an adventure that will be frightening, humorous, and emotionally resonant.
The show features a talented cast including Alfred Molina, known from Spider-Man; Geena Davis, who starred in Beetlejuice and Thelma & Louise; Alfre Woodard (Salem’s Lot); Bill Pullman (Spaceballs, Independence Day); and Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story, This Is Us).
The upcoming 2026 series is a horror show called Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. It’s being described as a suspenseful and eerie horror story that centers on a couple during the week before their wedding. It’s no secret, though, that the wedding doesn’t go as planned.
The Duffer Brothers are collaborating with Haley Z. Boston, who wrote the screenplay and will also be the showrunner and executive producer. They were immediately impressed with her writing, telling Netflix it was “twisted, terrifying, funny, and just.”
I’m really excited about this new movie, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen! The cast is fantastic – Camila Morrone, who I loved in Daisy Jones & The Six and The Night Manager, is playing the bride, and Adam DiMarco, great in The White Lotus, is the groom. Plus, you’ve got Jennifer Jason Leigh – a powerhouse from Fargo and Annihilation – and Ted Levine, who I recognize from Monk and Big Sky. And Gus Birney is in it too, I recently saw him in Shining Vale and The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window. It’s shaping up to be a thriller I won’t want to miss!
Stranger Things Has Another Spinoff in the Works
While the details are still developing, the established narrative around Hawkins remains consistent. The creators, the Duffer Brothers, have stated they’re shifting focus away from the original characters, but plan to continue telling stories within the same world.
This new story features different characters and a different setting, but it still has some ties to the original. However, we intentionally wanted this to be the final chapter for the town of Hawkins, the Upside Down, and all the characters involved, bringing everything to a definitive conclusion.
Stranger Things is streaming on Netflix.
