Over time, the number of game developers expressing criticism towards the lower-performing hardware and limitations of the Xbox Series S has increased significantly, with notable games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Black Myth: Wukong included. Remarkably, many high-profile titles have also experienced delays in their Xbox releases due to this machine. Yet, it appears that Microsoft is not planning to withdraw support for the Xbox Series S.
In a recent conversation with Destin Legarie, Microsoft’s Gaming CEO Phil Spencer shared that Xbox Series X will not be releasing exclusive games. He cited the increasing popularity of handheld PCs and the upcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 as reasons for the gaming industry to maintain support for devices with diverse specifications.
Spencer explained, “I’m approaching it from nearly the opposite perspective at the moment. As developers, we’re benefiting greatly due to the emergence of handheld PCs and the prospective launch of the Switch 2. The fact that we’ve been focusing on the Series S for some time gives us a significant edge. This means our games are already tailored to fit the specifications of devices like the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and many others that are being introduced right now. Additionally, the flexibility of modern engines enables them to adjust to these new specifications.”
He mentioned that he’s enjoying playing “Indiana Jones” on the Series S, and it looks fantastic. He also noted that it can handle current-generation games quite well, but most upcoming games will support multiple devices. Interestingly, the Xbox Series S specifications align nicely with the new devices being introduced today. Therefore, he believes this combination of power and performance is a crucial consideration for game developers in the future.
Despite facing controversy since its launch in 2020, Microsoft’s more affordable current-generation machine undeniably has its own distinct benefits, particularly appealing to less demanding users.
Indeed, as rumors swirl about a potential new Xbox console scheduled for a 2026 debut, it’ll certainly be intriguing to observe how much longer the Xbox Series X/S continues to receive updates and support.
