Building upon a series of sets inspired by legendary artworks like The Great Wave and Starry Night, LEGO is set to introduce another brick-crafted masterpiece from Vincent Van Gogh into the LEGO Art collection. Crafted in partnership with Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum, the Sunflowers (#31215) set brings one of the world’s most recognized artworks to life using an impressive 2615 pieces. In our view, this is the finest addition yet to the LEGO Art range, and all you need to know about it can be found below.
In Arles, France, where he resided, Vincent Van Gogh created multiple versions of his famous Sunflowers painting, but the LEGO model is designed based on a 1889 version now displayed at the Van Gogh Museum. This LEGO set showcases 16 sunflowers in a three-dimensional structure that aims to replicate Van Gogh’s distinctive thick impastos and his skillful application of light and shadow. The set includes various shades of yellow, adjustable petals, and a detachable frame. Upon completion, it can be hung on your wall using the provided hanging accessories. With dimensions of 21 inches tall, 16 inches wide, and 2 inches deep, this vibrant piece measures approximately 54 cm by 41 cm by 5 cm.
Pre-purchasing the LEGO Art Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh (#31215) is now possible at the LEGO Shop for $199.99, with an official release on March 1st. This unique set will also be commemorated with replicas that will be permanently displayed in the Van Gogh Museum and the LEGO Store Amsterdam. Additionally, a brick-built LEGO installation will be exhibited in the museum from June to August 2025, and later moved to LEGO House Billund and LEGO World, Utrecht. Fans can also look forward to a virtual tour of this exhibition online. In an imaginative twist, picture Van Gogh’s iconic scene from Doctor Who, but set in this very LEGO exhibition – would he still weep or be utterly bewildered?
Stijn Oom, a designer at LEGO, shared his thoughts on the project: “Working on one of the world’s most iconic paintings can be intimidating, but recreating Sunflowers has been a dream fulfilled. In partnership with the Van Gogh Museum and its specialists, we delved into the intricate details to painstakingly create a 3D replica of the original artwork. The most difficult yet essential part was figuring out how to reproduce the impasto texture using LEGO bricks while maintaining the painting’s unique asymmetrical balance. We are incredibly proud of the outcome and hope our fans will find as much joy in building it as we did in bringing Van Gogh’s masterpiece to life.
Rob Groot, Director of the Van Gogh Museum expressed delight at the meticulous collaboration between the LEGO Group and our museum experts. He hopes that this LEGO set will spark interest and engagement among new audiences about the art and life tale of Vincent van Gogh.
