Initially unveiled images are out as ITV officially reveals details about their forthcoming phone hacking series titled “The Hack”.
As I eagerly await the premiere of this upcoming series, I can’t help but share my excitement after learning more details about the intriguing seven-episode drama that lies ahead. The recent release of behind-the-scenes footage featuring an illustrious ensemble cast has only served to heighten my anticipation for the story it promises to unfold.
I’m excited to be part of a new series penned by renowned screenwriter Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials), where David Tennant, Robert Carlyle, and Toby Jones are set to headline. Our show will delve deep into the intriguing tale behind the phone hacking scandal, offering an immersive exploration of the story.
This drama, taking place between 2002 and 2012, skillfully combines two true accounts. One is the story of investigative journalist Nick Davies, portrayed by David Tennant, who exposed phone hacking at the News of the World. The other narrative runs alongside this, focusing on the investigation into the murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, led by former Metropolitan Police detective chief superintendent Dave Cook, played by Robert Carlyle.
Additionally, it’s been verified that Toby Jones, known for his role in Mr. Bates vs The Post Office, will portray the former editor-in-chief of The Guardian, Alan Rusbridger.
This drama, a collaborative production between ITV Studios and Stan Australia (with AC Chapter One and One Shoe Films), will also be overseen by BAFTA-winning director Lewis Arnold, renowned for his work on popular shows like Time, Sherwood, and ITV’s The Long Shadow.
In addition, Patrick Spence (known for Mr. Bates vs The Post Office) will serve as an executive producer on this project. He currently heads up AC Chapter One as its managing director.
Besides Tennant, Jones, and Carlyle, more familiar faces have been revealed as part of the cast as well.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that this production boasts an impressive ensemble. Rose Leslie steps into the role of Miss Austen, while Dougray Scott brings his talents as Crime. Eve Myles, known for her work on Torchwood, is also part of the cast. Adrian Lester from Hustle and Katherine Kelly from Protection are joining forces here too. Not to forget Kevin Doyle from Line of Duty and Neil Maskell who graced our screens in Hijack. Lastly, Lara Pulver, a familiar face from Spooks, rounds off this stellar lineup.
Additional actors joining the project are Lee Ingleby, known for “The Long Shadow”, Pip Torrens from “Poldark”, Lisa McGrillis of “Rivals”, Sean Pertwee famous for “The Night Caller” and Robert Bathurst, who has acted in “Cold Feet”.
Richard Pepple, Nadia Albina, Phil Davis, Ace Bhatti, Charlie Brooks, and Steve Pemberton complete the cast.

In response to the unveiling of The Hack’s commission, author Jack Thorne expressed: “This event is an enigmatic and misleading aspect of our recent past. With numerous hidden depths, I believed, as a political enthusiast, I grasped all that transpired. However, my comprehension fell short. The struggle for the truth left me astounded.
It’s crucial to share this tale at this point in time, as the truth appears to be under greater threat than ever before.
I’m truly excited to collaborate with David, Robert, Toby, Lewis, Patrick, Joe, and Abi in telling this story on screen. Let’s strive to capture the intricacy of the events and pay tribute to the remarkable journalism that forms its foundation.
In a similar vein, ITV’s drama chief, Polly Hill, expressed her pride in working on this significant drama alongside Patrick Spence, Jack Thorne, and Lewis Arnold. This trio is exceptional, and they are just the right individuals to translate this tale into visual form.
Furthermore, the exceptional caliber of our cast is a clear reflection of the talents of David Tennant, Robert Carlyle, and Toby Jones.
At present, there’s no set date for when The Hack will be released, as it’s currently undergoing post-production following its filming completion in the year 2024.
