Teen Mom's Catelynn Reveals the One Thing She'd Change About Her Baby’s Adoption

Catelynn Lowell doesn’t regret many things, but giving up her first-born daughter Carly for adoption in 2009 is not one of those regrets.

The Teen Mom star just wishes she had done it her way.

In a special interview with TopMob News, Catelynn expressed that if given the same circumstances, she likely would have made the same decision because it spared her some of the hardships and traumas she experienced during her upbringing in Michigan. However, she emphasized that if she could go back, she would approach things differently.

It is unlikely that she and her husband Tyler Baltierra, aged 33, would have chosen the North Carolina-based couple, Brandon Davis and Teresa Davis, to be their child’s adoptive parents.

The 32-year-old emphasized, ‘Had I made the choice then, I would have selected a pair in Michigan who were open to full adoption from the start. There are aspects of my decision that I would reconsider.’

When she was only 16 and pregnant, Catelynn recalled her experience with adoption as having no one explain the implications. Instead, everyone simply handed her documents like a young girl, and she felt compelled to sign them without understanding their contents.

In her words, if given another chance, Catelynn expressed that she would undoubtedly seek legal advice to ensure she fully comprehended any documents she was asked to sign in the future.

They utilize their appearances on MTV’s “Teen Mom: The Next Chapter”, airing on January 30 at 8 pm, as an opportunity to share knowledge with others. (Nova, aged 10, Vaeda, 5, and Rya, 3 are their daughters.)

Catelynn clarified that societally, the topic of adoption is often viewed in a favorable manner. However, when they began discussing the challenges and intense emotions they experienced, people responded with surprise, telling them they should be grateful. Yet, as she pointed out, adoption isn’t all about sweet treats and bright skies; it encompasses trauma, pain, sadness, unanswered questions, and many difficult aspects as well.

Take, for instance, her current relationship with Carly’s parents.

Four months after Catelynn disclosed her phone number was no longer accessible, she stated, “Adoption is now completely closed by them,” she expressed. “I’m still blocked, and they recently asked me to stop sending gifts as it was deemed inappropriate and unnecessary, among other issues.

Catelynn admitted that she’s been navigating some incredibly challenging situations over the past few months, which she likened to getting stuck in deep pits. She further explained that during this period, she became aware of significant aspects about adoptees, adoption statistics, and information related to birth parents that she was previously unaware of or not properly informed about. This lack of knowledge, she said, was what left her feeling most frustrated because no one had adequately prepared her for the full range of decisions she was making.

So, she and her husband of nine years can’t stop, won’t stop talking about their adoption journey.

Catelynn emphasized the significance of discussing the genuine experiences faced by adoptees, as they are the ones most impacted. She believes it’s crucial for people to be aware of these challenges if they are considering adoption, since she herself was not informed about them earlier and has found herself caught off guard as she grows older. It’s a tough reality to grapple with.

And yet, she’s determined to keep on swimming.

Despite their current lack of contact, they’ve been inquiring with Carly’s parents about the reason behind her avoiding them. As Catelynn put it, “We’re trying to find out if it’s Carly who doesn’t want connection, because if that’s the case, it would be painful, but we would empathize and say, ‘If you ever feel ready for contact again, we’re here, and we understand that dealing with this can be difficult for you.’

In summary, she went on to explain that if her parents are reacting out of fear, as her child’s biological mother, it is my responsibility to demonstrate persistent efforts in maintaining communication with the child. This is crucial because it benefits her most if that is indeed her preference.

Because at the end of the day, she stressed, Carly’s desires are the only ones that truly matter.

Catelynn expressed that she hopes Carly’s future connection with them will be whatever she desires. Whether it’s a bond with her biological siblings or with Catelynn herself, it’s great. If she prefers not to have a relationship at all, that’s perfectly fine. Ultimately, the focus should be on what’s best for Carly as an adoptee.

Though, of course, the MTV star takes the feelings of her other daughters into account as well.

Although Catelynn admits that she and Tyler are “completely transparent” with their daughters, she sometimes frets over the effects of Carly’s being away from them.

Catelynn expressed, “There’s something else crucial they don’t teach you – the impact on your kids when you choose to become a parent. It can be quite challenging.

Despite the circumstances, they still manage to honor their oldest daughter. As Catelynn put it, “Our home is filled with photos of Carly, and that’s just a part of everyday life for us.
