As an avid fan, I can’t help but share some disappointing news about MultiVersus, the exhilarating free-to-play brawler from Player First Games and WB Games. In a blog post published on Friday, the developers announced that Season 5 will be its grand finale, marking the end of our beloved game. On May 30th at 9:00 a.m. PST/noon EST, MultiVersus’ servers will bid us farewell forever.
Starting February 4, 2025, the upcoming fifth season will introduce two new characters to join the game: Aquaman from DC Comics and Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes. To continue enjoying MultiVersus after the servers are shut down, you’ll need to log into the game at some point during this fifth season. Once that’s done, you can carry on playing against AI opponents locally or team up with friends for a couch co-op experience.
If the servers for MultiVersus are taken offline, you won’t be able to download the game as a new player when Season 5 begins. To ensure you can access it, be sure to sign in on your Xbox, PlayStation, or Windows PC before Season 5 starts.
WB Games continues to face challenges
MultiVersus debuted as an open beta in 2022, with gameplay reminiscent of Nintendo’s Smash Bros. series. However, the main attraction lay not just in the combat, but also in the eccentric assortment of characters hailing from various Warner Bros. universes. So, you might find yourself pitting Shaggy against Batman, or even facing off with Arya Stark and Superman!
As I delved into the open beta of Multiversus, my previous colleague, Miles Dompier, penned down that while the game boasts an undeniably promising future, its current offering might fall short for players yearning for more than mere online battles. Fortunately, the game’s free-to-play structure significantly reduces the hurdle to jump in and start playing.
Even though the game was still in its free trial phase (beta) and many players bought Founder’s Packs, it managed to become the top-selling game in the U.S. during July 2022. After spending a year in an early access period, the developers decided to temporarily shut down the game for nearly another year, stating that they needed time to make necessary repairs and upgrades.
In May 2024, when MultiVersus returned from its hiatus, it didn’t manage to regain the same level of popularity as it had previously, according to WB Games who stated that the game fell short of expectations in November 2024.
It’s important to note that MultiVersus isn’t the only game from Warner Bros. facing challenges; another title, Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, also encountered difficulties. This game was launched in 2024, but its support ended with its fourth season. Reports indicate that Warner Bros. reported a loss of approximately $200 million on this particular title.
Moving forward, it appears that WB Games is allegedly developing a comprehensive edition of the smash hit single-player game Hogwarts Legacy. This title was the top-selling game in the U.S. in 2023 and has remained on the charts since then. If the rumors are true, this updated version of the game is said to feature an extension with fresh storylines and additional quests, but no official announcement has been made yet.
