Approximately 26 years have passed since Takashi Miike’s acclaimed Japanese horror film, “Audition,” debuted at the Vancouver International Film Festival. According to Deadline, Danish filmmaker Christian Tafdrup (known for the original “Speak No Evil”) is set to helm and co-write a fresh adaptation of Ryū Murakami’s novel that served as the basis for the 1999 movie. Focus Features, Hyde Park Entertainment, and Mario Kassar Productions are reportedly close to finalizing a production deal for this project. “Audition,” directed by Miike, is widely admired among genre enthusiasts and critics; the film won the FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) Prize out of competition at the 2000 International Rotterdam Film Festival and significantly boosted Miike’s global career.
Miike’s version of Audition, based on Murakami’s tale, is widely regarded as the definitive adaptation by horror enthusiasts, making the announcement of another interpretation a mix of excitement and sadness, particularly if this new rendition strays from its Japanese roots. However, having Tafdrup at the helm for the remake brings some comfort. Tafdrup has experience with bleak or startling material, so there’s little worry that the director will soften the dark undertones of the story and its graphic final act.
Fans of the 2022 Danish horror film “Speak No Evil” can rest easy knowing that Tafdrup and his writing partner brother Mads will handle the remake of “Audition” with care. When James Watkins remade “Speak No Evil” in 2024, featuring stars James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis, Tafdrup expressed dissatisfaction with alterations to the original ending.
The Danish filmmaker expressed on the radio show Kulturen that there seems to be an inherent narrative in Americans, one where good triumphs over evil, which this new film embodies. He also noted that the American ending seemed “less risky” and that it carries a sense of happy resolution, a trait deeply ingrained within American culture, making it suitable for their consumption.
In recent times, I’ve noticed that there have been several attempts to remake or adapt the movie “Audition.” As a matter of fact, back in July 2024, Kevin Bacon revealed to Film Updates his admiration for Miike’s horror film, expressing his intention to lead an English-language remake of the cult classic. He confessed, “I spent many years trying to bring an American version of it to life. We faced numerous challenges and obstacles, and it was never quite realized. It was almost a reality, but we fell just short.
Audition is available to stream on Shudder, Peacock, Tubi, and Screambox.
