In the debate among Austen enthusiasts regarding Cassandra’s act of destroying Jane’s letters, Keeley Hawes, the actress portraying Jane Austen, expresses her viewpoint that this action was remarkably honorable.
During the series premiere event, Hawes expressed his thoughts as follows: “As for Cassandra, I’m not privy to her feelings, but in my personal view, what she did was extremely commendable – whether it was justified or not.
Many Austen enthusiasts believe her modern adaptations were destructive to our culture, but I argue she was visionary. She could not have predicted the era we live in today, where privacy is scarcely valued and everyone seems to be constantly curious about others’ deepest emotions towards their family, friends, and colleagues at every moment.
As a cinema enthusiast, I find it incredibly heartfelt and courageous how she carefully crafted her work as a tribute to her legacy. It’s an extraordinary act of love that moves me deeply, wouldn’t you agree? Truly, it takes immense bravery to do something so moving and thoughtful.
In the freshly released four-part series, Hawes takes on the role of Cassandra, whereas Synnøve Karlsen portrays a younger iteration of one of Austen’s sisters. Additionally, Patsy Ferran appears as Jane herself.
The new four-part drama showcases Hawes as Cassandra, with Synnøve Karlsen depicting a young Austen sister and Patsy Ferran portraying Jane herself.
The TV show draws inspiration from a novel by Gill Hornby sharing the same title, delving into the motivations behind Cassandra setting fire to Jane’s letters and underscoring the intense, sibling connection they shared.
In the directorial role taken by Aisling Walsh, Walsh echoes Hawes’ perspective, suggesting that Cassandra’s act of destroying the letters stemmed from a profound and tender emotion, namely “love”.
During the showing of the series, Walsh remarked: “At first, I pondered over it – I was unaware of the letters, truth be told. It wasn’t until I became part of the project that I sought advice from folks at the Jane Austen Museum.
In my own unique way, I’ve been contemplating things, given that I have two siblings and I continue to pen letters to various individuals, which might appear peculiar to some.
You might consider the messages in the letters you write to your dearest confidant or most cherished friend as if they were a vital part of your existence.
Indeed, she performed the action due to the rich memories of their shared past that were enclosed within those letters, reminding them of their youthful days.
Walsh stated: “It’s unnecessary for people to be aware of the private and intimate aspects of their relationship as sisters. Instead, what’s important is showcasing Jane’s brilliance as an author, and perhaps a significant part of her success might have been due to the support and affection from her sister.
To me, it’s absolute loyalty at play here, not an attempt to alter history in any way. I believe it’s crucial for readers of these novels to perceive Jane as she truly was – the real Jane. The details of their relationship are a private matter between them.
The ensemble for the upcoming period drama features Rose Leslie from Vigil, Phyllis Logan known for Downton Abbey, Max Irons of Condor, Alfred Enoch famous for How to Get Away with Murder, Calam Lynch recognized in Bridgerton, Liv Hill starring in The Serpent Queen, along with Jessica Hynes from Life After Life, Mirren Mack hailing from The Witcher, and Kevin McNally well-known for The Crown.
