YOU WON’T BELIEVE What’s Coming in Alien: Earth

The forthcoming Hulu show titled “Alien: Earth” plans to introduce the widely recognized “Alien” science-fiction series to television, opening up fresh realms for this beloved franchise. The “Alien” franchise originated in 1979 with Ridley Scott’s self-titled first film and has since produced three sequels, three prequels, and the “Alien vs. Predator” spin-offs. Beyond these cinematic endeavors, the “Alien” universe has ventured into various other popular platforms like comic books and video games.

The “Alien” franchise has experienced a somewhat rocky response since Ridley Scott’s initial film and James Cameron’s 1986 sequel “Aliens,” but it has undoubtedly served as a foundation for both sci-fi and horror enthusiasts. The upcoming release in 2024, “Alien: Romulus,” is often credited with rejuvenating the series, and this revival is poised to persist with the premiere of “Alien: Earth” this year. Here’s what we currently know about the upcoming “Alien” TV series and how it may tie in with the previous films.

Alien: Earth Plot & Timeline

The upcoming series, titled “Alien: Earth,” serves as a precursor to the main “Alien” saga, unfolding two years prior to the initial “Alien” film. This series will center around the aftermath of an extraterrestrial spacecraft crashing onto Earth, introducing the xenomorphs to our planet. Notably, “Alien: Earth” becomes the third installment in the “Alien” franchise to be set on Earth, succeeding the two “Alien vs. Predator” movies. Given that “Alien: Earth” is positioned on Earth, it carries a greater responsibility as a prequel to align its narrative with the broader canon of the franchise. This includes the fact that xenomorphs are not a recognized species by most humans or the general population of Earth.

To put it simply, an all-out xenomorph invasion of Earth, as depicted in the Alien franchise, has never been recorded in human history. Given the way the Predator franchise has moved away from the Alien vs. Predator films, it’s unlikely that Alien: Earth will tackle this subject. However, since this series is unique for featuring xenomorphs on Earth, it can either set the stage as the first documented instance of their presence on our planet or one of several occurrences that have been kept hidden from the public by governments like the U.S. and others.

The Characters of Alien: Earth

As a die-hard Alien fan, I can’t hide my excitement about the upcoming series, Alien: Earth! Though the iconic characters from the mainline Alien franchise won’t make an appearance, this spin-off promises to expand the universe with fresh faces. The lead character in Alien: Earth is none other than Wendy (Sydney Chandler), a remarkable adult woman who harbors a child’s consciousness within her mind. To top it off, we’ll see Timothy Olyphant grace our screens as Kirsh, a mentor figure for Wendy in this thrilling new adventure!

New figures appearing in the series “Alien: Earth” are Boy Kavalier, CJ, Dame Silvia, Tootles, and Slightly, portrayed by Samuel Blenkin, Alex Lawther, Essie Davis, Kit Young, and Adarsh Gourav respectively. Furthermore, a representative from Weyland-Yutani will be featured in “Alien: Earth”, with Sandra Yi Sencindiver set to appear as an unnamed high-ranking official from the corporation.

The Connection Between Alien: Earth & The Alien Movies

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I must say that the creators behind Alien: Earth have made it clear that this installment will maintain a stronger bond with the core Alien series compared to its prequels, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. While Alien: Earth may be narrowing its narrative scope by doing so, there are still numerous opportunities for it to intertwine with the broader Alien film franchise. One intriguing possibility is that the main plot of Ridley Scott’s original Alien could directly impact the storyline of Alien: Earth. Given the setting and timeline of the latter, it could perfectly align with the Weyland-Yutani corporation’s relentless pursuit to retrieve the xenomorph that terrorized the crew on the Nostromo and bring it back to Earth. In a chilling echo of their cold-hearted decree, Weyland-Yutani had callously declared the “crew expendable” in their pursuit of this objective.

In the potential second season of “Alien: Earth,” set two years before the original “Alien,” the story could unfold as to how the Weyland-Yutani corporation first learned about the existence of the xenomorph species. If this happens, “Alien: Earth” might depict Weyland-Yutani orchestrating a plan to lure the Nostromo spacecraft towards LV-426, where they hoped the crew would encounter facehuggers and bring a Xenomorph back to Earth. This connection to the first “Alien” could open up other intriguing plotlines, such as exploring the origins of the xenomorphs themselves, if “Alien: Earth” gets the go-ahead for a second season.

Alien: Earth will debut on FX on Hulu in 2025.
