The Weeknd is stepping into the blinding lights of the 2025 Grammys.
Four years following his absence from the award ceremony, four-time Grammy recipient Abel Tesfaye (also known as The Weeknd) unexpectedly took to the stage at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. There, he performed two of his hit songs, “Die For You” and “Timeless.” For a look at more impressive performances from the 2025 Grammy Awards, check out this link.
At his Feb 2nd show, The Weeknd, dressed in an oversized coat with hood, black sunglasses, and gloves, stood solo under a red spotlight on stage. As he began to sing “Die For You,” the hands of multiple backup dancers emerged from the shadows, gradually appearing along with their bodies surrounded by smoke.
The concert featuring The Weeknd didn’t stop there with surprises. Alongside other performers like Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Doechii, and Sabrina Carpenter on the music night extravaganza, The Weeknd also invited Playboi Carti to join him for a live performance of their collaboration “Timeless.
Approximately four years prior to his surprising Grammy comeback, the artist behind “Blinding Lights” (who more recently won the Gramophone for Best Melodic Rap Performance in 2022 for his collaboration with Kanye West titled “Hurricane”) publicly declared that he would be skipping the ceremony because of the “confidential selection committees.
In his statement from March 2021, he declared, “I’ve decided that my record company will no longer enter my songs for Grammy consideration.
Ever since then, The Weeknd hasn’t made an appearance at the most prestigious music event. This fact is particularly noteworthy to Harvey Mason Jr., the president of the Recording Academy.
Harvey stated on February 2 when presenting the singer, “I could hear his passion, I sensed his devotion,” he expressed. He spoke about desiring an institution that prioritizes the welfare of all musicians, an organization that mirrors the current and future music community as a whole.
It turns out that The Weeknd’s boycott was indeed recognized, as Harvey put it, “Over the last couple of years, we’ve paid attention, we’ve made adjustments, and we’ve evolved.
