Actress Dafne Keen, who portrayed the young Padawan Jecki in Star Wars: The Acolyte, discusses her feelings about the show’s cancellation following only one season during an interview with Screen Rant at the Saturn Awards. She expressed that it was a complex and overwhelming experience for everyone associated with the production, but they are all very proud of what they achieved together. Keen also commended Amandla Stenberg, her co-star in The Acolyte, for her graceful handling of the situation’s aftermath.
Looking back at her experience in the galaxy far, far away, Keen is thrilled to have been involved with a Star Wars production. In her own words, “Being a huge fan myself, it was an immense joy to embody a Jedi character.” She can now proudly check that off her bucket list.
Following the conclusion of “The Acolyte”‘s solitary season last summer, Disney made an announcement that they were terminating the series due to its high production costs (estimated at around $230 million). Despite this, the creative team behind the show had intentions for further seasons, with a focus on expanding upon the appearances of Darth Plagueis and Yoda in the finale. Since Disney’s decision, various cast members from “The Acolyte” have expressed their thoughts; Manny Jacinto, who played beloved character The Stranger, stated that it has become his personal ambition to bring back Season 2.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m always excited about new stories featuring my favorite characters. Though “The Acolyte” won’t be returning for another season, it’s heartening to know that the universe isn’t done with Jecki and Yord yet! These intriguing characters who met their end in “The Acolyte,” will get more attention in the upcoming novel titled “The Crystal Crown” due out in July.
On a related note, we also got a prequel comic last September focusing on Kelnacca, the Wookiee Jedi from the same universe. It’s always fascinating to dive deeper into these characters’ backstories!
Leslye Headland, the showrunner of “The Acolyte”, had envisioned three seasons when she started working on the series. Although Jecki’s character was killed off in the fifth episode, it is likely that Keen, as an actor, was aware of Headland’s long-term plans for the series, which might explain her response to its cancellation. As a fan, it must have been exciting for Keen to portray a Jedi and contribute to potentially a new chapter in Star Wars storytelling.
“The Acolyte” was the initial on-screen depiction of the High Republic era by Lucasfilm, offering a narrative distinct from the Skywalker Saga, yet maintaining some significant links. The disappointment of having the series discontinued before Headland’s vision could be fully actualized would have undoubtedly been a crushing blow for the cast and crew – particularly since “The Acolyte” faced review bombing during its short run.
If The Acolyte had gone on, it would have been intriguing to discover what plans Headland and her team had next, as the hints about Plagueis and Yoda were tantalizing clues with the potential for thrilling surprises. It’s possible that the story could carry on through different outlets in the future. Though The Acolyte was cancelled, Lucasfilm has introduced characters from the show into published materials, suggesting a possibility for more stories. Given how much was left undone in The Acolyte, it would be satisfying if novels or comics provided a fitting resolution to its storyline.
