The upcoming role-playing game from Obsidian Entertainment, titled Avowed, is about to hit shelves, marking the debut of an exciting feature across Xbox games that could potentially set a new standard. Although it was previously revealed that Avowed would be accessible via Blizzard Entertainment’s Battle.net platform, a fresh look at the game on Xbox Wire now verifies that Avowed will incorporate cross-buy functionality.
In simpler terms, purchasing Avowed using an Xbox Series X|S console, Battle.net, or the Xbox PC app grants you access to play it on any of these three platforms, provided your Xbox and Battle.net accounts are connected. This is due to the expansion of Xbox Play Anywhere.
Previously, Battle.net was only utilized by Blizzard for hosting games from Activision Blizzard within Microsoft’s gaming empire, like the Call of Duty series. However, Avowed represents the first game from other Xbox divisions that can be played via this service.
Will other Xbox games follow Avowed to Battle.net?
As an analyst, I am eagerly anticipating the outcomes of the upcoming experiments involving Microsoft’s game development publishers. At the moment of writing, Avowed is the only title from Xbox Game Studios set to debut on Battle.net, while Compulsion Games’ South of Midnight has chosen to forego the platform for its April launch instead.
DOOM: The Dark Ages by Bethesda Softworks and id Software is only available on Steam and the Xbox app for PC users. I’ve questioned some developers from Xbox about potential non-Activision Blizzard games coming to Battle.net, but no one has reported any concrete plans as of yet. However, this situation could evolve swiftly in the coming weeks and months.
I strongly advocate for initiatives that expand player choices and possibilities. Should this approach prove successful and more Xbox games migrate to Battle.net, additional measures will be necessary, including harmonizing achievements and ensuring that Xbox Cloud saves are accessible universally across all play locations.
A significant number of us from the Windows Central gaming squad are now immersed in playing Avowed, and once the game’s media embargo lifts on February 13, there will be a wealth of insights and reviews for you all to explore!
The highly anticipated game “Avowed” is set to debut on February 18, 2025, simultaneously on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC platforms. This includes Steam, the Xbox App, and Battle.net. As an exclusive Xbox first-party production, the standard version will be accessible on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from the very first day of its release. Pre-ordering the Premium Edition of the game grants early access starting February 13. For comprehensive information regarding pre-orders, I recommend checking out my “Avowed Preorder Guide”.
