Unforgotten Season 6: Groundbreaking Autism Representation Shakes Up the Show!

In the latest installment of Unforgotten, Detective Chief Inspector Jessica James (Sinéad Keenan) and Detective Inspector Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) encounter a fresh, chilling mystery. Moreover, this season welcomes several new characters to its ensemble of guest stars.

Just like in past seasons, Unforgotten centers around a single case each time, with the investigative team working diligently to piece together the puzzle that connects all the characters. Ultimately, they reveal the identity of the culprit and uncover the reasons driving their actions.

Among the fresh faces joining the cast of Unforgotten for its sixth season is Maximilian Fairley, portraying the character Marty Bains. He has commended the intriguing quality of Marty’s narrative.

Fairley shares that he is an individual diagnosed with autism who resides with his mother in Kent. He admits to sometimes feeling a bit disoriented, but is optimistic about the progress made in representing and understanding individuals like himself, noting that it has advanced significantly.

Prior to the series’ comeback this weekend, Fairley expressed: “For a long time, I’ve felt that autistic characters are typically relegated to supporting roles or portrayed as victims. It’s truly invigorating to see [writer] Chris defy this norm with Marty’s narrative.

Regarding the potential influence of his portrayal of Marty on viewers’ views about autism, Fairley stated: “Representations of a particular group can significantly shape the broader public’s understanding and perception of that group.

I’m hoping that sharing Marty’s experience might encourage people to reconsider their usual representations of individuals with autism, and recognize the unique challenges they may encounter in scenarios similar to Marty’s.

Frequently, decisions concerning autistic people fail to consider their personal preferences. I hope this show sheds light on the possible outcomes when anyone’s dignity is compromised in such a manner.

As an autistic individual, Fairley noted that playing the character Marty involves a unique bond based on empathy, since it encompasses understanding the sensations of loneliness, being misunderstood, and yearning for that special connection – discovering your tribe and a place where you truly fit in.

He mentioned that Chris has skillfully portrayed Marty in a manner that challenges traditional expectations, and this is clearly evident in the scripts. However, he didn’t make it too obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, he made me fall in love with this character.

I’ve always found Marty to be genuinely pure and innocent, but let me clarify something – this doesn’t imply that he’s immune to making huge blunders. In fact, he’s quite capable of making terrible mistakes too.

Concerning Marty’s role in the broader narrative and case, only time will tell. However, one constant with Unforgotten is its knack for delivering numerous plot twists and emotional rollercoasters in each episode. So we can expect a thrilling ride in Season 6.

As per the official summary for the upcoming season, the storyline commences when presumed human remains are discovered at Whitney Marsh. This promptly summons Jess and Sunny to the location, causing them to postpone their previously arranged evening plans, much to the displeasure of Jess’s husband.

Dr. Balcombe’s examination indicates that the discovered remains appear quite fresh, pointing towards a troubling implication: the body was deposited in that location already severed into parts.

With this newfound understanding, Jess and Sunny step up their hunt, confident that more body parts might not be too distant.
