Dragon Quest 12: Horii Teases New Info on Darker Installment

2025 marks the date when creator of the legendary Dragon Quest series from Square Enix, Yuji Horii, went live with his radio show group KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, to unveil some news about the upcoming Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate.

As per Yoji Horii’s translation through Automaton-Media, the team at Square Enix is putting in a lot of effort into developing Dragon Quest 12. He looks forward to gradually revealing more specific details about the game in the time ahead.

Dragon Quest 12 was initially unveiled on May 27, 2021, as a sequel to the highly praised Dragon Quest XI from 2017. Since then, there hasn’t been much information revealed about this game in almost four years, causing some fans to speculate whether it could have been scrapped.

Excitedly speaking as a tech enthusiast and long-time Dragon Quest fan, I’m thrilled to share that Yuji Horii’s recent update has put my mind at ease. The next grand adventure in the beloved Dragon Quest series is still very much in the works, with more details set to be unveiled soon.

What we currently understand about Dragon Quest 12 is that it will offer a more serious, mature narrative compared to its predecessors, given that the Dragon Quest franchise is typically associated with humorous escapades. This new installment also intends to redesign the classic turn-based battle mechanic and center the story around decisions that can significantly impact the characters you encounter.”

This version aims to maintain the original meaning while making it easier for readers to understand and follow the text flow.

What new adventures await in this new, dark chapter of the Dragon Quest series?

As someone who loves Dragon Quest, I’m eager to find out how Square Enix plans to approach crafting a more somber Dragon Quest game catered towards an older audience. Unlike its usual light-hearted and kid-friendly narrative, these games have demonstrated the courage to incorporate dark, poignant themes. To give you a hint without revealing spoilers, both Dragon Quest 5 and Dragon Quest 11 feature moments that are incredibly moving and could rival the most emotional scenes from any Final Fantasy game.

In the meantime, as we eagerly anticipate what Dragon Quest 12 might bring us, we’ll fill our time with the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and the future releases of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake on Xbox and PC platforms. These remakes are scheduled for release in 2025 across various platforms such as Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.
