New York Dolls Frontman Diagnosed With Stage 4 Cancer

David Johansen and his family are opening up about his difficult health journey.

According to Leah Hennessey, the lead singer of the band New York Dolls has faced challenges after being diagnosed with cancer over 10 years ago, including treatments and setbacks. Now, she requires help.

In a statement posted on the Sweet Relief Musician Fund’s website, which she also shared on her Instagram Story last February 10th, she explained that for nearly a decade, David has been undergoing intense cancer treatment, specifically stage 4. Earlier in the pandemic, we found out that his cancer had worsened and he developed a brain tumor. Since then, there have been various complications.

Leah, whose mom Mara Hennessey got married to David in 2013, mentioned that he has been largely incapacitated from working for about five years. She added, “He hasn’t revealed his diagnosis to the public, as my parents Mara and David are usually quite private. However, due to the growing financial strain our family is experiencing, we feel it necessary to disclose this information now.

Leah shared that her stepfather, a former rocker, has been battling an unspecified form of cancer. His health deteriorated significantly after a serious fall around Thanksgiving, which necessitated a medical operation followed by ongoing treatment.

Following a week-long hospital stay and a successful operation, I’ve found myself confined to bed and struggling with my health. The ordeal has significantly accelerated my condition, and my mother has taken on the round-the-clock caregiving role.

Leah remarked, “David remains just as amusing and insightful, but his physical condition requires more care than we can manage without the assistance of specialized professionals.

In my perspective, I’d like to share an update, underscoring that the gravity of the circumstances calls for collective support rather than my individual efforts alone in managing my health challenges.

David shared in a statement published in Rolling Stone on Feb. 10 that he’s been enjoying life despite his ongoing illness, spending time with friends and family, but the fall he experienced the day after Thanksgiving took our situation to an entirely new degree of incapacity.

He exclaimed, “This is the most intense pain I’ve felt throughout my life. Normally, I don’t ask for assistance, but this situation is critical. I appreciate your help.
