Andy Serkis, who plays the lead in “The Batman“, has shared that he’s privy to the narrative of the eagerly awaited sequel. During a discussion at MEGACON Orlando (via Love Our Life), the actor talked about his part in director Matt Reeves’ series, expressing admiration for Reeves’ vision and Robert Pattinson’s acting prowess. Serkis further disclosed that during the promotional run for “The Penguin”, he had a chance to chat with Reeves regarding the upcoming “The Batman Part II”. Although Serkis didn’t reveal any specific plot points, he did mention that Reeves shared the film’s storyline with him.
In simple terms, Serkis expressed, “There’s a great deal of enthusiasm for it, and I share that excitement just as much as you do. In fact, I’ve had a chat with [Matt] not too long ago… he shared the tale of Batman 2, and I was absolutely thrilled by it.
Despite being announced for release in 2022 following the premiere of The Batman, production on The Batman Part II has been ongoing for several years and its launch date has been postponed numerous times. As of now, it is set to debut in October 2027. In December, James Gunn, one of the co-heads at DC Studios, shared some insights, explaining that the delay was primarily because they were still working on completing a full script for the film.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m eagerly waiting for the news on when Robert Pattinson and Keanu Reeves will start filming “The Batman Part II” and “The Odyssey,” respectively. While we haven’t got an exact date yet for “The Batman Part II,” it seems that Pattinson’s commitment to “The Odyssey” might delay the sequel a bit. In the interim, I’m curious about what’s brewing in the Batman universe. Colin Farrell has caught wind that his character, the Penguin, may appear in “The Batman Part II,” but he hasn’t gotten his hands on the script just yet. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Wright, who plays Commissioner Gordon, mentioned back in November that he hadn’t spoken to Reeves for a while. So, we’ll have to wait and see how things unfold!
According to Serkis’ recent statement, “The Batman 2” seems to be progressing steadily, as it appears that Reeves has found a solid storyline. He merely needs to finalize the script. The reason for the delay isn’t clear; some had speculated that Reeves might integrate his “Batman Epic Crime Saga” into the revamped DC Universe, necessitating changes in “The Batman 2”, but it has been verified that Reeves’ vision will continue as a standalone story within its own Elseworlds continuity. It’s possible that work on “The Penguin” (which Reeves is an executive producer for) may have caused him to postpone “The Batman Part II”, and now he can focus more on that project. However, the film has taken a considerable amount of time to materialize.
I’m hopeful that upcoming Batman Part II developments will be as promising as Serkis’ recent comments suggest. The success of The Batman at the box office has sparked significant curiosity about Reeves’ interpretation of Gotham City. Though The Penguin did an excellent job filling in, fans can’t wait to see Pattinson’s Dark Knight back in action, squaring off against some of Gotham’s most infamous villains. Despite the repeated setbacks, fans can find comfort in knowing that Reeves is taking his time and not rushing things, aiming to deliver a sequel worthy of the original.
