Secret Marriage

Ariana Grande’s relationship with Cynthia Erivo is definitely not unlimited.

Adoring fans of the Wicked costars’ dynamic both onstage and off sparked discussions about their possible relationship and a surge of fan-written stories. Now, the artist known for singing “we can’t be friends” is shedding light on the gossip surrounding their strong connection.

According to a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter on February 11th, Ariana clarified that there is a common misconception that they are secretly wed.

Actually, she disclosed discovering material created by fans, titled “Gelfie stuff”, depicting the romantic relationship between Elphaba and Glinda, their characters, which turned out to be more explicit than she had anticipated.

Ariana confessed her regret about certain things she has witnessed, saying, “If only I could erase some scenes from my mind.” She had a premonition, but what unfolded was far beyond her expectations in terms of intensity and explicitness.

Regardless of the rumors about her and Cynthia’s relationship, the former star of “Victorious” is instead choosing to savor their friendship.

I had the privilege of collaborating with an extraordinarily gifted individual who is in a league of her own, as I expressed on Penn Badgley’s podcast, Podcrushed, last June. There’s simply no one else quite like her. Working with her felt like we shared a unique connection and were meant to work together. Every day, I felt secure and supported in our partnership.

She explained, “Our processes and requirements are somewhat alike yet distinct, and at the same time, we’re both unique and similar. In essence, we’re like two sides of the same coin, opposite yet identical. The remarkable love, trust, and deep affection we share, I believe, came to be in this manner because of these differences and because our paths were destined to cross. I truly feel that way.

According to Marissa Bode, the dynamic between Cynthia (who is in a relationship with Lena Waithe) and Ariana significantly influenced the atmosphere for the “The Wizard of Oz” prequel production.

In an interview with TopMob News last November, the actress portraying Nessa Rose, Elphaba’s sister, expressed her admiration for the powerful connection depicted in the movie. She noted that these young characters are still discovering themselves and solidifying their identities, which results in a strong and loving bond among them. It’s fascinating to observe and it adds a unique charm to the story.

Indeed, their friendship was essential for telling Elphaba and Glinda’s story.

Back in the day, I shared with TopMob a vital point about our story: it all boils down to the dynamic between Cynthia and Ari. If we, as creators, couldn’t empathize and support each other like Cynthia and Ari, how could we authentically portray the bond between Elphaba and Glinda?

In simpler terms, the 38-year-old said, “I believe it’s important to create room when someone is going to spend a lot of time with you. This makes shared experiences incredibly enjoyable compared to if we don’t. It benefits us both to be considerate towards each other in this way.

At the 2024 Oscars in March, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande had already hinted at what we could expect from the initial release of “Wicked”, set to hit theatres on November 22nd.

Erivo, wearing a green-tinted leather Louis Vuitton outfit with snake-like frills at the back, appeared prepared for both the red carpet and combat. On the other hand, Grande, dressed in a powder pink Giambattista Valli Haute Couture column gown, exuded classic Hollywood glamour, featuring extra fabric that created a peplum, a cape, a bustle, and a train all together.

At CinemaCon in April, the “Wicked” train pulled up with Grande onboard, dressed in a white and pink minidress by Oscar de la Renta that looked like a blossoming flower, while Erivo donned a green and silver Versace outfit, complete with striking satin thigh-high boots.

Not the colors of dear old Shiz, but she has an open invitation to play Quidditch for Slytherin.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, the award for Best Dressed was given to team “Wicked”, who turned heads at various events throughout the Games.

Initially, they commenced the Games during the Opening Ceremony on July 26th, with Erivo donning a strapless green Louis Vuitton gown featuring an impressive silhouette and Grande wearing a drop-waist powder-pink Thom Browne dress that would have earned approval from Audrey Hepburn.

At the 2024 Academy Museum of Motion Pictures 4th Annual Gala held on October 19, Erivo, who also sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” exuded an evil-yet-gorgeous charm in a dazzling emerald dress designed by Naeem Khan.

Another popular choice: Grande’s leather-trimmed polka dot ball gown courtesy of Balmain.

At a New York screening of Wicked on October 28th, Cynthia Erivo paired her T-shirt and cropped jeans with eye-catching green pumps and an intricately patterned Louis Vuitton coat as her accessory. This was held at the DGA Theater.

Grandé appeared well-prepared for her inaugural day at witching academy, donning a cream-colored button-front vest and coordinating skirt from Atelier Versace.

There seems to be some uncertainty as to whether Ariana Grande arrived at the 2024 WSJ. Magazine Innovator Awards enclosed within a mystical orb, but her intricately embellished white Vivienne Westwood dress certainly appeared suitable for such a fantastical voyage.

Simultaneously, Erivo’s Erdem gown, a blend of gray pinstripes and embroidered green silk, had an enchanting feel reminiscent of The Land of Oz combined with the sophistication of Wall Street.

At the November 3 Australian premiere of “Wicked”, Grande donned a grand pink Vivienne Westwood ballgown, channeling the magical character Glinda.

At the grand premiere, I couldn’t help but immerse myself in Erivo’s enchanting portrayal of Elphaba’s destined wickedness. Dressed in a striking black strapless Louis Vuitton gown, she adorned herself with an imposing lion’s head choker and a brilliantly embellished green manicure that seemed to echo the spirit of the character she was playing.

In conversation with Vogue Australia before her walk on the (equivalent of) the red carpet, the British actress expressed that she adores this ensemble deeply as it mirrors her personality. She also mentioned that it brings to mind feathers and overcoming the weightlessness barrier.

As an utterly enchanted fanboy, I couldn’t help but be bewitched once more by the mesmerizing charm of Cynthia Erivo at the November 5th “Wicked” photocall in Australia. This time, she cast her spell in a captivating emerald and black Marc Jacobs blouse, perfectly complemented by a mesmerizing black embroidered skirt.

For her most recent act, she skillfully split her gaze between her delicate headpiece and the impressive Mary Jane shoes with multiple straps, which undeniably increased her height from her 5-foot-1 stature by approximately 6 inches.

Grande was the gift in bow-trimmed Bode at the Australian photo call.

At the Los Angeles premiere of Wicked on November 9, Louis Vuitton opted for a vibrant green ensemble for Erivo, while Thom Browne designed a delicate gingham look for Grande.

At a Wicked screening organized by Vogue at New York’s Museum of Modern Art on November 14th, Cynthia Erivo opted for Dior, mirroring Elphaba’s favored hue, while Ariana Grande amped up the intensity of pink from soft to fiery in Louis Vuitton.

Over at the other side of the ocean for the London debut of “Wicked” on November 18th, Grande looked bright and sunny like a daisy in a romantic Ralph Lauren dress, while Erivo found the perfect balance between punk and royalty with her Schiaparelli attire.
