5 Pokemon Types That Need More Love in Gen 10

When I first started playing Pokemon Red and Blue, there were 15 different Pokemon types, which felt like a lot back then! Over time, they added Dark, Steel, and Fairy types, bringing the total to 18. But honestly, it sometimes feels like a few types get all the attention. You almost always get Fire, Grass, and Water as starter choices in new games, and those types are way more popular than others. It can make battles feel a little unfair sometimes, like certain types just have an advantage all the time.

With each new release, the Pokemon games have the opportunity to innovate, and the upcoming Generation 10 will be no exception. This will be the first major new installment since Pokemon Scarlet & Violet launched in 2022. While details about Generation 10 are still scarce, we can expect the usual selection of three starter Pokemon types. However, it would be great to see the series give more attention to some underappreciated types by introducing new Pokemon for them. Here are five types that really deserve more representation in the next generation.

5) Ground

Ground-type Pokémon aren’t as common as many other types, possibly because their designs often overlap with Rock-type Pokémon. While they have some strong points – like resisting Electric attacks and having a good set of type matchups – Ground types are vulnerable to Grass and Water, two very popular types, which can hold them back in battles.

Honestly, some of the Ground-type Pokemon designs are really cool – Cubone and Phanpy are definitely among my favorites! But it just feels like we should have more of them. Think about it – tons of animals dig and burrow, and Ground-types aren’t tied to just one type of place, right? I’m really hoping Game Freak gives us a bunch of new and creative Ground-type designs in the next generation – Gen 10, please!

4) Dragon

Dragon-type Pokémon have been present since the very first games, but they remain uncommon. While there aren’t many Pokémon that are purely Dragon-type, there are quite a few that combine Dragon with another type. In future games, it would be great to see some fresh Dragon-type designs. Recent Pokémon have often looked like dinosaurs, and I’d like to see a return to the more mythical and elegant style of older Pokémon like Dratini and Dragonair.

It’s logical that Dragon-type Pokémon are uncommon, considering how strong they usually are in battles – many players remember how challenging Lance was in the first generation games with his Dragon-type team! Luckily, types like Ice and Fairy were added later to create a better balance. Interestingly, having more Dragon-type Pokémon could actually help some of these rarer types become more popular. Hopefully, the next generation of games will introduce exciting new Dragon Pokémon designs, increasing both the variety and the number of Pokémon in this type.

3) Ice

I’ve been a Pokémon fan since the beginning, and I’ve always found Ice-types interesting! Like Dragon-types, they were around right from Gen 1. But it’s kind of surprising how rare they still are – there are only about 60 Ice-type Pokémon out of all the Pokémon that exist. I think part of the reason is that you usually only find them in snowy or icy areas in the games, which limits where you can catch them. Plus, they’re pretty weak against a lot of other types, and that probably makes some trainers avoid using them, which is a shame!

Even though Ice-type Pokémon have several drawbacks, they still offer a lot of promise. They’re particularly effective against powerful Dragon and Ground types, and there’s room for more imaginative designs. I hope future games introduce Ice-type Pokémon earlier in a way that fits their cold-weather theme, and feature some fresh designs beyond the typical ice cream cones or penguins we’ve seen before.

2) Dark

I’m a big fan of Dark-type Pokémon, especially Umbreon and Houndoom. This type wasn’t introduced until the Gold and Silver games, and it really changed things up by adding a new weakness for powerful Psychic-types and offering some cool, darker Pokémon designs. Despite all that, Dark-types are still pretty rare, and I’d like to see more of them in future games.

Many Dark-type Pokémon, particularly those that are purely Dark-type, have designs that resemble dogs or cats. While a lot of these designs are really good, I’d like to see more variety in what Dark-type Pokémon can be. Like Ice-types, Dark-types often have several weaknesses, but their effectiveness against Ghost and Psychic types makes them valuable team members. Also, types that are super effective against Dark-types – like Bug and Fairy – aren’t as commonly seen, which gives them an advantage. Hopefully, we’ll see even more creative Dark-type Pokémon in the next generation!

1) Steel

I’ve never been a fan of Steel-type Pokemon. I usually prefer Pokemon that are cute, but Steel-types often have designs that feel cold, modern, and a bit too futuristic. Steel was added in the second generation of Pokemon games and is still not a very common type. Thankfully, some recent designs, like Cufant and Orthworm, are different from the typical Steel-type look, and I’d love to see more of that creativity in the next generation of games.

Steel-type Pokémon are often seen as strong because they resist so many attacks. This is balanced by the fact that they don’t do a lot of damage to many other types, especially common ones like Fighting, Ground, and Fire. Introducing more Steel-type Pokémon could give players more strategic choices and allow for some interesting new designs, as this type is currently quite rare.
