The anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set for release this year, promising a comeback of some classic Nintendo series. So far, only a new Mario Kart has been confirmed, but we can expect more titles to follow suit, and perhaps even remasters of previously absent games. This is what former Nintendo artist Takaya Imamura hopes for. It’s currently Valentine’s Day in Japan, coincidentally marking the anniversary of two games Imamura worked on: “Star Fox Assault” and “Steel Diver: Sub Wars”. In celebration, Imamura shared a fresh piece of artwork commemorating these games on his X/Twitter account.
In this artwork, the leader of Star Fox, Fox McCloud, is depicted clutching a replica submarine model. In the picture, he expresses his hope that both games, originally from the GameCube and 3DS (Star Fox Assault and Steel Diver: Sub Wars respectively), will be playable on the Switch 2 in the future. The artwork also reveals the original release dates of these games: Star Fox Assault debuted on February 14th, 2005, while Steel Diver: Sub Wars was launched on February 14th, 2014. As of now, neither game has been made available on any other platform besides the GameCube and 3DS.
Although it appears that a remake of “Star Fox Assault” might not happen, a brand-new “Star Fox” game for the Nintendo Switch 2 is very plausible. The series has been somewhat dormant since the launch of “Star Fox Zero” on Wii U. In the age of the Switch, devotees of Star Fox have made do with the team’s presence in “Starlink: Battle for Atlas,” and with re-releases of the classic SNES and N64 games via Nintendo Switch Online. A fresh “Star Fox” game could serve as an excellent showcase for the enhanced graphics and processing capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2.
It appears the reappearance of Steel Diver: Sub Wars on the Nintendo Switch might be less probable at this time. However, considering Nintendo’s strategy of using remastered games like these to sustain the current system, it’s not impossible. In fact, we’ve seen other niche franchises resurface recently, such as Another Code: Recollection, so there’s a chance Steel Diver: Sub Wars could also reappear on the Switch.
One of the greatest anticipations when it comes to a fresh video game console is discovering the software that gets unveiled. As for Nintendo Switch 2, we’re all eagerly expecting to hear about the games that will be launched for this upcoming console. Ideally, there should be a diverse array of new titles along with continuations of Nintendo’s most cherished series. Fortunately, we’ll likely get more details on April 2nd, during a special Nintendo Direct event dedicated to the new system.
