A Marvel Studios executive revealed that two major movies planned for 2026 will happen at the same time within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans already enjoy figuring out the timeline of MCU events, but these upcoming releases will make things even more complex.
Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum recently shared that the upcoming Punisher special will take place around the same time as Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again within the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum explained that the upcoming Punisher series will be set in the same timeframe and location as the second season of Daredevil: Born Again.
It’s best if I don’t say much about it, but the ‘Punisher’ special directly ties into the events and setting of Season 2 of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’.
Until now, it wasn’t clear how the Punisher and the Born Again series would connect. While reports indicated Jon Bernthal would reprise his role as the Punisher in Season 2 of Born Again, this new information suggests his appearance might be limited.
When viewers last saw Jon Bernthal’s character, a determined crime fighter, he was captured and put in prison by the villain Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). If he’s going to get his own series, he’ll likely need to break free from that prison first.
According to Winderbaum, if both projects happen concurrently, the Punisher would probably escape from Kingpin’s custody in Born Again, directly leading into the Punisher special.
Marvel has a lot planned for 2026, including the upcoming series The Punisher and the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, as well as a new Avengers movie and the return of Paul Bettany as Vision. The second part of Born Again will focus on Daredevil (Charlie Cox) getting ready for a fight, as Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), now the mayor of New York City, makes it illegal for vigilantes to operate there.
What Punisher’s Timeline Placement Tells Us About the Series?
The fact that the Punisher special event will happen at the same time as Daredevil: Born Again gives us some important clues about what to expect from both shows.
The second season of Born Again will take place in a New York City torn apart by conflict. Following the declaration of martial law, Mayor Kingpin now controls the city with strict authority, creating a much different environment than viewers saw at the start of Born Again Season 1.
After escaping Fisk, the Punisher will likely be a fugitive not just from the police, but also from anyone who supports Fisk – and there are a lot of them now. He’ll be dodging both the law and those seeking revenge while continuing his violent methods of justice.
With the second season of Daredevil coming to Disney+, viewers are excited to see how Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock will face the challenges created by Kingpin’s war on New York’s heroes. And with the Punisher series expected around the same time, audiences will also get to see how Jon Bernthal’s character responds to the unfolding events.
With talk that the upcoming Punisher special will connect directly to his role in the 2026 Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie, Marvel Studios is creating a compelling storyline for its superhero universe.
