Arrow Star Stephen Amell Admits He Had “Short Fuse” on Set of CW Series

Stephen Amell is gearing up for his return to television next week with NBC’s Suits LA, but before he takes on the role of former federal prosecutor Ted Black in the Suits spinoff series, he reflects on his time wearing a different kind of suit – his time as Oliver Queen in The CW’s Arrow. In an interview with Variety, Amell shares insights about making the well-known DC-inspired series and confesses that he had a quick temper on set. He admits to learning as he went along and being overly approachable towards fans, which unfortunately didn’t always yield positive outcomes.

For the initial two to three seasons of Arrow, Amell found himself holding on tightly. He was clinging to it with all his might, as he put it during filming. The work hours were extensive. By the time we reached the fifth episode of the first season, Amell had worked harder on that show than he ever had on any project in his life.

He explained that he had never been a monster or disrespectful, but did have a quick temper. You figure these things out as you go along.

Stephen Amell also spoke about certain aspects of his interactions with fans during the duration of Arrow. On social media, Amell was quite active, conversing with fans and viewers, as well as participating in numerous fan conventions. Amell found himself addressing what he referred to as “overly critical individuals” and their comments regarding the show – something he claims he now handles differently.

He mentioned that there were many overly critical individuals, particularly those associated with Arrow, in the past. He often felt like he was trying to monitor or correct them.

He stated that social media now plays like a game where one person’s gain equals another’s loss, meaning nobody truly wins. He discovered this lesson through personal experience.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but admire Stephen Amell’s unwavering affection for the show that launched the Arrowverse on The CW and paved the way for the live-action DC Universe we adore today. Even though he acknowledges his quick temper during the filming of Arrow, he has since learned to approach reactions to the series more thoughtfully. Recently, when a Green Arrow joke was made in an episode of Peacemaker, Amell voiced his displeasure, expressing that he didn’t find it amusing at all.

Last fall, Amell expressed that the criticism towards their show felt unnecessary. He didn’t take kindly to it at all…To put it frankly, he felt that the shows following the movies, including Peacemaker, were often treated poorly. Although he understands that they are on The CW and it’s just television, he also acknowledges the significant role the Arrowverse plays in recent DC iterations. Despite being subjected to harsh criticism for years, this latest instance felt excessive to him. He admitted he didn’t feel angry, but hearing about it made him think, ‘I can’t stand those people.’ He stressed that he puts just as much effort into his role as any other actor. Playing a superhero without powers for 23 episodes each year is no easy task, and while he doesn’t seek recognition, he feels their show deserves a bit more respect.

Regarding Suits LA, the long-awaited series will debut on NBC this Sunday, February 23rd. The story revolves around Ted Black (Amell), a former New York federal prosecutor turned lawyer in Los Angeles. His firm is at a critical juncture and to keep it afloat, he must step into a role he despised throughout his career. Ted’s circle includes a talented ensemble of characters who grapple with their loyalty towards both Ted and each other as they intertwine their personal and professional lives. Meanwhile, events from the past that caused him to abandon everything and everyone dear years ago start to come undone.
