Tobi Bakare’s Shocking Revelation: Will He Return to Death in Paradise for Good?

Fans of Death in Paradise were thrilled to welcome back a familiar face earlier this season.

In the initial episode of its fourteenth season, Sergeant JP Hooper, portrayed by Tobi Bakare, made an appearance after a student he previously taught at Honoré PD was tragically killed.

He appeared as a guest for the second time, having first shown up during season 13 when his character’s arc aligned with Marlon’s departure.

Previously, I had been a regular cast member on the series from seasons four through ten, portraying a character who ultimately chose to pursue a fresh opportunity as the Head of the Police Training Program. This shift took me away from the beautiful shores of Saint Marie.

The explanation given by the media is: I’ve had a long stint on this show, and there are intriguing developments regarding my future professional endeavors. Moreover, my child is starting school, which adds another exciting layer to life. All in all, it appears promising.

In truth, the stated reason isn’t the case. You see, if another opportunity arose that necessitated travel for my wife and me, we would carefully consider it. Therefore, I wouldn’t want to mislead anyone by suggesting that’s the reason for our decision to remain in the UK.

He then went on to discuss something else that motivated him to say goodbye.

While inside a church in Guadeloupe, the preacher brought up the topic of seven years during his sermon. The instant he did, something unexpected occurred – a sudden realization struck me. It felt as if a lightbulb went off, illuminating a previously hidden truth.

In three years, I’d still be here. That would make it seven years altogether, and suddenly, the realization struck me deeply.

But has Bakare ever considered returning full-time?

Currently, my children are maturing, and I get to spend quality time with them frequently. It’s reminiscent of tending a garden, where there are various types of plants – you have your career, finances, family, and businesses. Sometimes, one plant requires more attention, and for me, it’s still nurturing the family plant, without adding any new ones [laughs].

I spent my time acting in “Death in Paradise” while having three of my kids with me. As a result, they have become quite familiar with the language and settings of Guadeloupe since they’ve been there. The production company, Red Planet, is truly exceptional – not only do they provide ample resources, but they genuinely care for their actors on an emotional level. Just like the show brings joy to viewers, they know how to elicit authentic performances from the talented actors they work with.

That element is something that’s ingrained permanently. As a result, I believe that connection will remain unbroken forever.

Later, Bakare added that sometimes, when you plan to return to something, it’s important to ask yourself, “Am I attempting to reignite a past affection?” or “Is my desire to go back connected with old feelings?

He further stated, “To be honest, Death in Paradise isn’t a past love for me, rather it’s a steadfast fire that fluctuates in intensity. At times, it blazes fiercely, and at others, it flickers softly, but its consistency is undeniable.

Returning to the topic, making this decision wasn’t straightforward as I had typically chosen to work within the UK boundaries. However, I’m nurturing the germ of family growth. After discussing it with my family, mentors, and trusted friends, they responded with encouragement: “Tobi, why not?

I agreed, it seems right, why not? I’m glad I chose to return for this episode.
