Silent Hill f Writer Was Told by Producer that Silent Hill is a Phenomenon, Not Just a Town

Most Silent Hill games take place in the town of Silent Hill, located somewhere in the United States. However, Silent Hill f is moving away from that tradition. According to writer Ryukishi07, series producer Motoi Okamoto views “Silent Hill” as more of an overarching event than a specific place. Ryukishi07 shared in a Famitsu interview (reported by GamesRadar) that he questioned Okamoto about how Silent Hill f could be set in Japan despite its name referencing an American town.

Ryukishi07 explained that after being asked to work on Silent Hill f, they had a lengthy discussion with the series producer, Okamoto. They talked about things like the Japanese setting and the core meaning of Silent Hill itself. Ultimately, they agreed that Silent Hill wasn’t simply a location, but rather a type of event or phenomenon. Ryukishi07 believes this conversation helped them build a solid foundation for the story and world.

Although most of the classic Silent Hill games take place in the same American town, there are a few exceptions. For example, Silent Hill 4: The Room features a significant portion of gameplay inside a room that isn’t located in the town itself. Likewise, Silent Hill: Homecoming and Silent Hill: Downpour are both set in different locations with only a loose connection to the original town.

Recently, Silent Hill: The Short Message has done something new: it suggests that Silent Hill isn’t so much a place, but a strange event that can happen anywhere. As we explored in our review, this opens up exciting possibilities for future Silent Hill games – they could focus on the series’ core themes and scary atmosphere without needing to be set in the town itself.

I’m really excited about the new Silent Hill f game! It’s set in this creepy little Japanese town called Ebisugaoka, and you play as a character named Shimizu Hinako. What’s cool is it’s set way back in the 1960s, and the story seems to be all about the pressures women faced back then – especially when it came to family and friends. It looks like it’s going to be a pretty intense and thought-provoking experience.

Director Al Yang explained that the town’s creation stemmed from conversations between Konami and Ryukishi07. NeoBards Entertainment, the developer, promised Konami that the story would strongly resemble a typical ‘Ryukishi07’ creation.

I was really drawn into the story while working on the level design. Our lead, Kaiyu Chang, actually talked about how much it hit home for her. She said she read an early version of the script a few years back, and because she was pregnant at the time, the themes of societal expectations for women really resonated with her on a personal level. She said a lot of the scenes were super emotional for her, and I can definitely see why!

Silent Hill f is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Check out our review for more details.
